International Accord’s Post

Today marks twelve years since the Rana Plaza collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh — a tragedy that claimed the lives of at least 1,138 garment workers and left thousands more injured. We remember and honour those who lost their lives, those who were injured, and all who continue to bear the physical and emotional aftermath of one of the deadliest industrial disasters in recent history. This day is a solemn reminder of the human cost of unsafe working conditions. The Accord, alongside its signatories, partners, and stakeholders, remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring safe and healthy workplaces for all garment and textile workers, where no one fears a building collapse or workplace accident. We encourage more brands to join the Accord and ensure worker health and safety in their supply chains. The groundbreaking initiatives under both the International Accord and the Alliance have significantly transformed the workplace safety and security landscape, particularly in structural, fire, and electrical standards. These efforts could serve as a model for other sectors and the entire supply chain within the RMG sector. An actionable and inclusive strategy, with the government taking the lead, is crucial to ensure accountability and the sustainability of responsible labour administration and labour inspection bodies. Furthermore, the adoption of advanced technologies to address OSH risks is essential. However, it is equally important to address and manage technology-related OSH risks and hazards effectively.
