Not TradFi...Not DeFi...we are living in an age of HyFi. Last week I the opportunity to moderate a digital assets panel that featured Rabia Iqbal who observed that we are in a period of time where the worlds of traditional finance and decentralized finance would coexist together. This a notion that we have always believed at Rubicon Crypto. For too long, the debate has been either about the supremacy of the traditional financial system (#tradfi ) over the emerging decentralized digital asset industry (#defi ) or visa versa. Despite the implosion of FTX last week, the broader digital asset industry is not going anywhere. The reality is that for at least the coming decades, both systems are going to co-exist in an age of Hybrid Finance (#HyFi)...full stop. As to FTX, the broader implications stemming from the collapse last week will bring the subject of regulation truly front and center and by extension, become THE defining moment for the future of the digital assets industry. Join us for a timely conversation about the unfolding FTX story. Bretton Woods Committee: whats old is new again. Fresh off the Bretton Woods Committee 2023 Annual Meeting last week, I could not help reflecting that perhaps there has never been a more important moment in the organization's history to deliver thought leadership than where we stand today. From the most recent banking crisis (er, tremor?), the accelerated erosion of trust in global central banking institutions, sweeping issues facing established IFIs, and, not to mention, the massive disruption to legacy financial institutions from blockchain related technologies...hard to imagine a membership cohort that is more perfectly suited to help respond to this portfolio of challenges. The Bretton Woods Committee ethos of advancing "effective global economic and financial cooperation" has never been more timely, or more relevant. Special thanks to Elena Tosana (MBA) and the entire BWC team for their collective efforts to bring the annual meeting to life: Zach Fry Stephanie Wasserman Rosemary Garcia Melissa Smith Corey Retell. Given all the moving parts involved in hosting multiple events during the International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings, their execution was even more impressive. #imf #worldbank #futureoffinance #cbdc #blockchain #banking #leadership #innovation Emily Slater Bill Dudley Kristalina Georgieva David Malpass William Rhodes Atlantic Council GeoTech Center The Digital Dollar Project Global Peter Drucker Forum Emory University - Goizueta Business School NYU School of Professional Studies Afsaneh Beschloss Lorenzo Bini Smaghi Thierry Déau Colm Kelleher Rick Suarez Rebecca Patterson Susan Segal Jose Vinals Joyce Chang Wei Sun Christianson Roger W. Rubicon Crypto: At the Intersection of Digital Assets and the IMF. At first glance, many in the #digitalassets and #crypto community are often confused as to why we would have an interest in the affairs of the International Monetary Fund, notions that we find short sighted. Despite its challenges, few organizations are more deeply connected to the global marketplace than the #imf, and by extension, few organizations could prove to be more important to the evolution of digital assets AND the global adoption of #blockchain technologies. Simply put, there is much to learn from this Bretton Woods institution that can inform how the digital asset industry evolves and grows. Related/Unrelated. Consider that one of the recurring themes this week was the lingering challenges for an IFI that is dedicated to supporting the financial stability of underdeveloped nations is...corruption. Today, there are readily available #dlt solutions that could be deployed by the IMF that would provide full transparency of how/where their proceeds are allocated by borrower nations....by extension, drastically reducing the percentage of loss due to corruption. Arguably nothing would be more important to the long term health and credibility of the IMF than eliminating corruption...blockchain technology can deliver that today. "...the best way to predict the future is to create it..." P. Drucker Thanks to Peter Drucker for a mic drop quote, and to the NYU School of Professional Studies for bringing the Metaverse Collaborative to life. Given the challenges that knowledge workers will face in the years to come, there are few initiatives that touch on more of the strategic priorities of the school (Grow, Redesign, Create, Improve, Launch, Implement) while also preparing students for the fast evolving realities of the digital workplace than the Metaverse Collaborative. SPS is indeed predicting the future, by creating it... Proud to be among a very distinguished list of industry experts and thought leaders that will speaking at the inaugural Metaverse and Cities Summit later this month. #innovation #futurism #metaverse Immutable '23 | Atlanta Blockchain Center Atlantic Council GeoTech Center Alex M. Thanks to the metaverse, a convergence of the physical and virtual worlds is taking place today and enabling individuals, businesses, brands, and even cities to interact and connect people in new and different ways. This new capability is creating a flywheel of economic and social opportunity that is resulting in new levels of creativity, contribution, community, and ownership. On April 27-28, 2023, the NYU SPS Metaverse Collaborative will be hosting the first Metaverse and Cities Summit in conjunction with Sharing Cities Alliance and Cornell’s Jacob’s Urban Tech Hub. "I don't think its a question about being for or against anything...I think its a question of exploring the possibilities..." P. Hammond, Chair of Copper As usual, Brian McGleenon, delivers a superb and wide-ranging interview of Phillip Hammond, Chair of digital asset custody provider, Copper.co. As the former United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer (is there a more TradFi/CeFi title and role?), Hammond's takes on...regulation, stablecoins, CBDCs, crypto custody, etc...are refreshing and encapsulate the sober, open-minded and pragmatic approach to the industry that feels much more prevalent outside the States. At Rubicon Crypto, we would call that approach "rational exuberance", and share a similar opinion about the future of money and investing. On this week's episode of The Crypto Mile, I spoke to former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond about CBDCs, stablecoins and crypto's place in global finance. "The crypto market is here to stay, and it is not really for regulators or others to say this asset or that asset has no value, an asset has value if someone is prepared to pay for it. "But, if there is a marketplace to be made then it needs to be properly regulated, and I am quite comfortable for an institutional market for cryptocurrency assets", Hammond said. He added that the sector is not just being populated by peripheral players, but is currently "being colonised by the institutions and most of the big banks globally are investing in developing their own digital capabilities". During his tenure as the UK's economic minister, Hammond was seen as a conservative who focused on fiscal discipline rather than innovation. However he has now made a surprising venture into the world of cryptocurrencies, web3 innovations and digital asset infrastructure. Hammond's entry into the digital asset realm came when in late 2021 he became senior advisor at Copper, a City of London-based crypto custody firm. Then, at the beginning of 2023, he was appointed Chair of Copper, and despite market fluctuations, Copper has transitioned to become a leading provider of institutional digital asset custody and trading solutions. Pleased to have represented Rubicon Crypto at the Chainalysis Inc. #Links2023 conference in #nyc this week. CEO Michael Gronager set the tone from the onset when he asserted that "we believe ALL value will move on blockchain", and, while the timeline may be in question, we share the same belief. Links has become a signature event for those of us who care about the integrity of the crypto and digital assets industry and responsible regulation. Perhaps what is the most frustrating aspect of the digital asset industry that remains today are the wildly outdated talking points about the criminal usage of #cryptocurrencies. This is a myth. If the many critics and pundits would only take the time to review their annual global crime report...kudos Kimberly Grauer...they would realize how foolish and ill-informed they sound. The work that Chainalysis has done to collaborate with governments, law enforcement and private enterprises alike has not only demonstrated why the blockchain is increasingly one of the worst places for criminals to transact, but they have helped solve countless crimes and recover a staggering amount of value. "Crypto Crash: The Rise and Fall of SBF and FTX" Proud to have represented Rubicon Crypto on the Scripps News "In Real Life" feature on the implosion of #ftx and role of its founder #sbf. This is easily one of the biggest scandals in modern business history and kudos to Zach Toombs and his team for the long-form format that does justice to scope of the story. This just in... Crypto did NOT invent fraud...crypto did NOT invent bankruptcy...crypto did NOT introduce the notion that there might just be executives with ethical deficiencies to the world. At best crypto tokenized those notions...and without any doubt...SBF has come to symbolize them! #cryptocurrency #blockchain #digitalassets #innovation #futurism #ScrippsNews #InRealLife Immutable '23 | Atlanta Blockchain Center Atlantic Council GeoTech Center Global Digital Asset & Cryptocurrency Association Government Blockchain Association Bretton Woods Committee Elena Tosana (MBA) Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC Crypto and Digital Assets All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) APPG on the Metaverse & Web 3.0 CryptoUK Ted Jenkin Michael Grizzard NYU School of Professional Studies New York University American University - Kogod School of Business Emory University - Goizueta Business School Natalie Brunell Bianca Facchinei Paul Vigna Aaron Kaplan CoinDesk Coinbase Asset Management Coinbase Institutional https://lnkd.in/gHXd5v2A

So enjoyed my recent conversation with Darius McQuaid and honored to be featured in his inaugural Weekend Essay for Money Marketing. My interview was focussed on the inevitable intersection of financial advisors and the full spectrum of digital assets...not just in the United Kingdom, but within the global financial marketplace. However, as inevitable as it may be, this intersection can only be paved by the strongest blend of responsible regulation and industry education. At Rubicon Crypto, we have already been delivering the latter in the form of #cfp continuing education to thousands of financial advisors, and we have long been working on a library of thoughtful content for the #compliance professionals who will ultimately be supervising these new products and services. Whether or not you cross this new digital divide with Rubicon Crypto, remember to always do so with common sense and with rational exuberance. "A mosaic of technologies". A true honor to be the guest of Baroness Manzila Uddin and speak at her evidentiary hearing today for the APPG on the Metaverse & Web 3.0. in the UK House of Lords. During the proceedings, I had the opportunity to share some of the foundational work being led by my colleagues at the New York University Metaverse Collaborative. My sincere thanks to Afagh Mulazadeh and the APPG team for organizing today's hearings. While there is no shortage of definitions, in my view, what most generally refer to as the Metaverse today is actually a "mosaic of technologies"...technologies that also just happen to have the potential to usher in a new renaissance of human contribution.
