Homelessness is a very serious issue in the City of Seattle and across King County, with African Americans making up a disproportionate number of people seeking shelter and permanent housing. Africatown Community Land Trust, or ACLT, based in Seattle’s Central District, is a community-based organization confronting this issue head-on. Located on 16th and Yesler, the Benu Community Home, operated by ACLT, opened in December 2021 and is a low-barrier enhanced shelter for single adult males. Just a few weeks ago, ACLT celebrated Benu Community Day. The day served as a rallying call to showcase the impact of Benu Community Home and, to unveil the Benu Impact Report, which detailed the transformative work being done to uplift unhoused Black men in Seattle and King County. As the city grapples with a homelessness crisis—where nearly 30% of the unhoused population are Black despite making up less than 7% of the total population—Benu Community Home stands as a lifeline for change. The Benu Report detailed a holistic approach to not just providing shelter, but creating a foundation for renewal, support, and empowerment. Benu’s model transforms lives by offering a safe space to heal, build community, and reclaim opportunity. November is Homelessness Awareness Month, a time to step back and recognize the reality that homelessness can happen to anyone. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes, it takes only one unexpected turn to find ourselves in situations we never imagined. It’s not that people don’t care, but that homelessness can be a hard issue to look at closely—it’s often easier to compartmentalize or look away from something that stirs up so many emotions. Whether you’re a policymaker, a community leader, or a concerned neighbor, this month invites each of us to take a moment and face the complexity of homelessness. It’s not just about a lack of housing; it’s about support systems, opportunities, and our shared responsibility to build sustainable solutions. This November, consider reaching out to your local agencies or Continuum of Care (CoC) organizations. Ask how you can learn more, advocate, or volunteer.

At the annual State of Homelessness Address, we announced our third consecutive year of reductions in homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, including the lowest total number of people experiencing homelessness in nearly a decade. 👏 According to the 2024 Point-in-Time count, a total of 3,718 individuals are experiencing homelessness on any given night in Dallas and Collin counties. That equates to a 19% reduction in overall homelessness and a 24% reduction in unsheltered homelessness since 2021. The strategic moves we’ve made as a community are showing results! But we still have work to do. Our community must continue investing in these effective solutions that will house more neighbors experiencing homelessness with the wraparound support they need to rebuild their lives. United Way of Ventura County is meeting their community’s needs in a wide variety of ways, two of which are particularly relevant this November: National Homelessness Awareness Month: For more than four years, United Way of Ventura County’s Landlord Engagement Program has been helping those with federal housing choice vouchers navigate the housing market and secure housing, and earlier this year, they began homelessness prevention work. To date, they have helped 782 community members secure housing or stay housed. United Way of Ventura County also raises awareness about homelessness in their community and connects those experiencing homelessness to resources. https://lnkd.in/eDFXTgVJ Native American and Indigenous Peoples' Heritage Month: As Ventura County is home to more than 20,000 Indigenous people, United Way of Ventura County made sure their free tax preparation outreach and services were available in languages commonly spoken by Indigenous peoples in their community: Spanish, Mixteco, and Zapoteco.

Joy Hunt has experienced housing insecurity throughout the years, she understands the hurdles and complications of losing your housing. She knows the indignity homeless folks experience everyday. The first time she experienced homelessness, she was working a 40 hour work week, homeless, and barely affording a hotel room in Sacramento to ensure she wasn't out living in the elements. In turn, when she would reveal to people she was homeless people would reply "𝘞𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴." This begs the question, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚? Today we kicked off Homelessness Week - ‘Homelessness Action Now’ by hosting an internal Haven Home Safe event discussing the challenges, misunderstandings and successes of working to support people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. In addition to being awestruck by the incredible work of our staff a few key action themes emerged: 💙 We cannot do this alone. Often the best client outcomes are the result of formal and informal partnerships and community support to deliver outcomes. 💙 Advocacy makes a difference. Our councils, state and federal governments are listening to us. We heard examples of community support resulting in change such as local planning permits changing to support homeless families. It is up to each of us to shout from the rooftops about issues that impact the communities we live in and to raise issues with government bodies working to make a difference. 💙 The current system (without access to sufficient social housing) is causing more trauma and delaying outcomes. While we wait to build more homes, we need some flexibility in how we (and other services) deliver support to people with complex needs. Despite the challenges, the passion and dedication of our staff could not be clearer. We are so proud of the work our staff do and taking the time to reflect on this was a great way to start Homelessness Week.
