Anime is less a genre than it is a platform for genre. Anime’s success is in part due to its inability to be boxed into being about any one thing, and its ability to capitalize on the flexibility of the format with emotionally complex stories that allow it to subvert genres in ways that are unavailable in traditional forms of media across content, connection, and commerce. I am excited to showcase work I had a chance to participate in with the smart folks Polygon and Vox Media. For more information, take a read to understand why Gen Z is so enamored with this form of storytelling. An extra special thanks to my co-author The Circus: Data Storytelling (Sebastian Fernandez)! -Andrew Melnizek, Russ Frushtick, Matt Patches, Matt Leone

Super interesting-- thanks for running this study! Hopefully quick question: are there any numbers on Latine anime fans' numbers compare proportionally to the Latine population overall? Anecdotally I have opinions, but I'm super curious if my experience matches reality.

So timely, I just saw Bleacher use anime-inspired social creative last night too! https://twitter.com/BleacherReport/status/1749261432645116030

Great research, but even more importantly, great packaging of the research so non-anime folks can digest the findings! It’s worth nothing that overseas has now permanently surpassed Japan for revenue, and the tipping point coinciding with this milestone is a perfect culmination of the start of the next phase of anime.

Ooo love this Edwin! "The other 56% are lying" - nice one you snuck in. The flow reminds me of this recent piece from The Verge: https://www.theverge.com/c/23998379/google-search-seo-algorithm-webpage-optimization

I concur: great research and well presented. What's not captured here - understandably, since the research focused on Americans - is the fact that anime (as well as manga) is a global phenomenon. It's been on the rise for years, although it needs to be noted that the pandemic was an unexpected and significant accelerator to its growth. It is a generational development, too (which the article notes): Gen Z consume more and care more about anime and manga, than they do about legacy Hollywood IP or super heroes etc.

I love seeing fandom conversations reach a wider audience...I'm also hoping the article touches on the blerd impact of anime's pop culture adoption

This is so interesting - and beautifully done! Gen Z is changing the game on making once niche fandoms mainstream. Great article Edwin and Sebastian!
