I'm pleased to announce that I've joined Kaiser Permanente as its Vice President of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Technologies. In this new role, I'll have enterprise accountability for ensuring quality oversight for AI applications that spans clinical operations, research, education and related administrative functions. This will also include establishing enterprise-wide governance to ensure a thoughtful and balanced approach to promoting innovation as well as safety, privacy, and security. I'm deeply honored with this opportunity. And I'm thrilled to join an organization I’ve long admired due to Kaiser Permanente’s deep commitment to value-based care, health equity, patient safety and clinical excellence. Kaiser Permanente also brings together a potent combination of strengths that positions it as a national leader in the responsible use of AI. These include: ⚡ A national footprint (covering 12.7M diverse patients across 8 states and Washington DC) ⚡ Robust data infrastructure for training and validating AI algorithms (including longitudinal claims data, pharmacy data and clinical data) ⚡ A commitment to systems improvement and a track record for implementing new clinical workflows at scale to support technological innovation ⚡ And a deep bench of world-class researchers, developers and clinical AI experts who are both developing state-of-the-art algorithms AND evaluating them to demonstrate real-world effectiveness and safety. While there's been a lot of welcome news from the federal government and White House on ensuring AI safety, security and trustworthiness; I firmly believe that Kaiser Permanente and other health care delivery system play an absolutely critical role in the vetting, implementation and monitoring of AI tools to ensure patient benefit, to support our clinicians, and to mitigate unintended consequences. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues both within Kaiser Permanente and outside to advance this important mission.
