What does an 80% carbon reduction look like? A pile.
Manufacturing cement, a key ingredient in concrete, is energy and carbon-intensive. So to reduce the carbon footprint of London Underground's Northern Line Extension, Mott MacDonald set out to build piled foundations, which use a lot of low-cement concrete. Piles were made with concrete in which ground-granulated blast-furnace slag replaced 95% of the cement, reducing the embodied carbon content by four-fifths.

Global carbon emissions must be halved this decade. To achieve that we need a rapid transition to zero-carbon energy systems.
Mott MacDonald is supporting the island of Barbados to do just this, using digital modelling tools and multi-criteria analysis to develop scenarios for reaching 100% renewable energy by 2030. It involves harnessing energy storage, electric vehicles and demand-side management. And a lot of wind and solar power.
