The entire FMLA/Disability 3rd party administration system is so fucked. When I am supposed to be out healing I spent half the day on the phone dealing with it. Read on.... Jan 27th - I started the process requesting March 24-May 15th knowing full well the recovery process based on dr conversations. March 24th - In recovery my wife called and it was approved but only through 4/19 (next week with RTW on 4/20) not my original dates. My wife is told I have to file an extension after first post op appt. April 11 - First post op where I was put in the brace and given a dr letter to remain out of work for 4 more weeks. May 9th next followup. I send all this over to the administrator with the letter per the extension requirement on 4/11 and start following up today with calls. I then find out the case worker is out of the office. 2 people later, I get told the dr letter means nothing to them they need medical records which require faxing the dr a request. I call the dr office FMLA team to find out their fax number and then find out their internal process can take until next Tuesday 4/18 to get back to disability with info and costs me $30. The dr office was the most helpful of the day BTW. The lady even called me once she got the fax and started to process it. Why? Because she also saw the timing issue the disability insurance company put me in. I then have to call tomorrow to see if I can pay the $30 to continue it processing through the dr's internal procedures. No $30.....(no response to the fax request) Now as per the process if I do not "return to work" I can be deemed "abandoning" my position. Not to mention the disability company said they can take days to approve the extension in which time I can pass the RTW date. Also payments may stop after 4/19 until the extension request is sorted out so then how do the bills get paid? That after all is the point of short term disability. Starting to see the issue? So all the while I am supposed to be out on leave, healing and instead I spent all day doing my case worker's job. I've not had ONE phone call TO me from the disability administrator after January. I've done all the work here. Had I not called today and chased things down with the case worker out of the office where would I be? The system is so utterly broken one can't even just be on leave to heal. BTW typing this one handed was a bitch... #people #job #work #medical #insurance

Sorry to hear all the issues you're having. Glad my wife's was smooth a few years back - but always seems like everone wants to throw all the paperwork in your lap and expect you to handle their stuff. And i'm sure all the staffing reductions of late haven't helped matters any. Hope it turns around for you

Sorry to hear that Chris. I had one of my direct reports out on bereavement last year and they did a great job for him. I guess they've got different folks working the disability side.

7yrs ago to the week I found myself with 2 smashed feet…my employer did all this work for me to make sure I was properly covered. Any luck with engaging them?

Update: From Wed-Fri last week I spent more time on the phone sorting through the extension process and request for medical records. On Friday the additional 3rd party that handles the dr records said they sent the invoice for payment of the request to Lincoln Financial the administrator. They said the invoice was NET 30, which of course doesn't work for payments stopping this week...so instead I paid their invoice to expedite the document processing. Also on Friday I did have a great conversation with the head of Global benefits that agreed I have done far too much work to keep this moving AND she also was more interested in why the request was changed. The paper trail shows a 7 week request that the case worker only approved for 4 weeks starting this whole "extension request" mess. Bottom line? I now wait until the medical records make their way over the the benefits team goes and smacks some heads so I can stop doing the case worker's job. If there is no continuing deposit on May 1st, when my mortgage auto debits, there won't be any money for it...so this is the stress I am thinking about on leave #irony Last week I started to question the "benefit" seeing as I spent more time working the problem than on leave.
