🌍 The @ 4 Corners Carbon Coalition is making significant strides in carbon removal by supporting innovative local projects in the Four Corners region. 🤝 Founded by local governments in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Boulder County, Flagstaff, and Salt Lake City, the coalition has awarded $725,000 in grants over the past two years to projects that repurpose liability biomass — potentially flammable or dangerous materials such as forest debris, yard waste, and municipal organic waste — into valuable carbon removal solutions, like biochar. 🌲These projects help address climate challenges like wildfire risk and contribute to long-term carbon storage. 🏘️ With support from local communities and leading experts, the 4 Corners Coalition demonstrates how local governments can invest in carbon removal while prioritizing responsible deployment, resilience, and community-driven solutions. 💡 Learn more about how carbon removal can not only curb wildfires but also contribute to building sustainable communities: https://lnkd.in/e3nUu_VW #CarbonRemoval #LocalGovernments #ClimateTech

🇺🇸 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has announced a major boost for carbon dioxide removal technologies, with up to $52.5 million available through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, to drive innovation in direct air capture (DAC) technology. 🏆 The Commercial Direct Air Capture Pilot Prize is designed to support direct air capture technology developers and help de-risk and demonstrate the commercial viability of these technologies, with a focus on real-world deployment. Developers will have the opportunity to design, build, commission, and operate DAC pilot facilities capable of capturing at least 500 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 annually. Competitors will also demonstrate their potential to contribute to, or participate in, the Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs program. 🏅Winning teams could receive up to $12 million each as they successfully achieve design, development, and deployment milestones through four phases: Concept, Engineer, Permit, and Operate, and ultimately operate a pilot direct air capture system for at least 2,000 hours. 📨 Phase 1 is now open for applications through February 7, 2025. 📣 Read the full announcement and access the application here: https://lnkd.in/gNcAxiEx #CarbonRemoval #DirectAirCapture #DAC #ClimateAction #FECM

We recently responded to the UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero on Integrating Greenhouse Gas Removals in the UK Emissions Trading Scheme. We applaud the UK government’s ambitious intention to support demand-side support for CDR with the ETS integration and offered the following comments in response to the questions listed in the consultation: 💡 It is critical that quality standards for the UK ETS (and other GGR markets) be criteria-based, and not pick or enumerate individual winners, in order to let the full range of GGR solutions innovate and compete to deliver the highest climate impact, at the lowest cost and with the most co-benefits. 📈 Delivering the scale of GGRs necessary to meet Paris Agreement goals will require rapid and massive policy intervention from world governments in every geography. The CO2BC encourages the Authority to widen geographical eligibility as soon as practicable. 🤝 We applaud DESNZ’s commitment to high quality standards and methodologies and encourage engagement and alignment with counterparts in the European Union, United States, UNFCCC, and other key national and multilateral governing bodies.
