Years ago, I was working for a sustainability consulting firm.
And since we were a startup, the team got to roll up their sleeves for many different kinds of projects.
📕 One of them was being part of a editorial team for a quarterly #sustainability magazine.
I remember hours spent sitting next to a designer choosing the right fonts and layouts for the magazine.
And in one of those conversations, a designer once told me -
"Did you know you could express and evoke emotions through a font!" 🤯
I found it fascinating then and still do.
And I was reminded of this recently when I came across a very innovative idea by a few brilliant designers. 👇

#Climatechange is real. But it is also abstract to comprehend.
The reason is that we cannot actually ‘see’ it happening. Because of this humans are unable to visualize the devastating impacts tangibly.
A design team of the largest Nordic newspaper Helsingin Sanomat worked on this couple of years ago.
They engaged a team from TBWA\Helsinki to develop -
The CLIMATE CRISIS FONT. 🌍
It is a first-of-its-kind OpenType variable font that helps people see the urgency of climate change in a more tangible form.
What does it represent?
✅ As the font size reduces, it shows how the ice is expected to shrink because of climate change based on current forecasts.
✅ The heaviest font weight represents the minimum extent of the Arctic sea ice in the year 1979, when satellite measuring began.
✅ The lightest weight represents IPCC’s 2050 forecast, when the Arctic sea ice minimum is expected to have shrunk to only 30 % of the 1979 extent.
How was it created?
☑️The designers created varying weights to exhibit the disappearance of Arctic sea ice.
☑️ For 1979- 2019, data was taken from from National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)
☑️ For 2020 to 2050, they used projections from the IPCC.
👉 How can you use it?
The Nordic newspaper has already used the font in a number of articles related to #climate change. The font is free to use and a unique tool for journalistic #storytelling.
