I stepped down as Chair of the IEEE 802 JTC1 SC in January 2023, but I have monitored its work since ... retiring is hard! Peter Yee is doing a great job as the new Chair. For the 1.5 years before I stepped down, I dealt with an IPR related issue that blocked the approval by ISO of IEEE 802.11ax (aka Wi-Fi 6) as an "international" standard. This is mostly not a problem in the real world, but it causes practical difficulties in some domains. I have discovered more than a year after I stepped down that the IPR issue has still not been resolved. The attached blog summarises the situation, the problem and my view on the solution. The bottom line is that ISO needs to act to resolve the blockage by following its own rules ... and quickly! Enjoy! 😀
An example of competitive pressures, or 'not invented here'? You'd think after 40 years this would have been resolved!
This was a problem since I was chairing iso jtc1 sc6 wg2 in 2015.
Oh, come on, Andrew! ISO follow its own rules? Only when it suits them. Well better you and your fellows than me! Enjoy your retirement. I still got a few years working in UAS secure comm!
Hard to let go but hope you’re enjoying retirement Andrew
Thanks for this Andrew Myles.
