According to https://lnkd.in/dntUARs the ECB project for making SEPA competitive with card networks like VISA and MasterCard as well as tech with providers like Apple and Google is to be unveiled late Mars 2020. In short you should be able to make SEPA instant payments in physical stores and on-line with the same ease and security as with Apple Pay, which is quite a challenge. Since this project has been run in uttermost secrecy, very few know any details on how the (to date illusive) "last mile" solution is architected. Maybe it is based on EMV and a European counterpart to "Carte Bancaire", or is it rather exploiting the PSD2 PISP concept?
