This post from the American Council on Education underscores the crucial role of higher education in driving America forward. By urging presidential candidates to support colleges and universities, they emphasize economic growth, innovation, equal opportunities, and lifelong learning. #HigherEd #LifelongLearning
I will never stop being a champion for #highereducation and the, as mentioned, "innumerable" ways the sector supports a well-functioning and successful society. Does it have issues? Of course. What doesn't?
However; higher education, and education in general, is truly key to helping us solve many of the problems we face as a global community. Additionally, if given the proper resources and tools for success, education (whether K-12 or postsecondary) is a core tenant of promoting democracy. It does, without a doubt, #buildAmerica.

Colleges are vital to the growth of a fair, inclusive and more productive economy, and for the success of the government's housing, net zero, NHS, care and growth targets and ambitions. But after suffering through austerity, they now need investment - for better pay, more training places, better facilities. Reimbursing the £210m VAT they pay each year would be an easy win. Addressing the £10,000 pay gap between college lecturers and school teachers will take time, but that needs to start now if those targets and ambitions are to be met. These are modest asks from a sector that knows how to deliver and will step up for government. Hope that Rt Hon Rachel Reeves and Darren Jones MP - Chair, Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee are listening. Always happy to discuss
Around 172 college leaders have written to the Chancellor Rachel Reeves to warn her that without investment in further education, the government’s missions cannot be delivered.

As we navigate the complexities of higher education policy, it's essential to recognize the evolving perspectives shaping our future. Kamala Harris's recent departure from the long-standing 'College For All' orthodoxy opens the door for new discussions around education funding and accessibility. This shift could redefine opportunities for future generations. For insights into this significant change and its implications, check out the full article here: https://okt.to/ecBin2. 👏🏼It’s great to see schools reporting improved student behaviour after implementing whole of school, evidence-informed approaches to teaching and learning!
📰These types of stories highlight the strong relationship between academic engagement and achievement, social-emotional behaviour, and wellbeing. This is why we need integrated, rather than siloed, systems and supports in schools. I talked about this with The Conversation Australia + NZ:

📈Our research in Multi Tiered Systems of Support is looking at new ways to align and integrate systems and supports in schools to help all students (and teachers) succeed! We can’t wait to share new findings and updates soon!

Sadly I have to miss this debate (lecturing, ironically enough!). On the issue of #research funding though, one thing is clear: the funding system itself (primarily in the guise of Taighde Éireann) has a valuable and important opportunity to break from the limited vision of the past 10 - 15 years to create a public research system focused primarily on curiosity-driven and non-commercial research: i.e. we should avoid duplicating private sector research in the public sector.
Shaping Higher Education's Future by Navigating the Intersection of Politics, Ideology, and Money
On Let's Talk Ed this week, we delve into the critical importance of long-term strategies and plans for the future success of higher education! Join us: Zahi Atallah, Chris Forde, and Kirby Lund in as we explore key aspects shaping the future trajectory of academia.
In our first segment, entitled "Shifting from Reaction to Strategy: Building a Solid Future for Higher Education”, we uncover the imperative need to transition from reactive measures to proactive strategies in higher education. We highlight how we believe that strategizing and planning can lay the path to a thriving future in academia.
In Segment 2: "Boosting Morale: The Transformative Power of Long-Term Planning in Colleges”, we discuss the profound impact of long-term planning on morale within colleges. We talk about how piling up on the already loaded plate of staff and faculty leads to low morale. We also talk about the need to review all processes and ridding ourselves of legacy and traditional ways of doing business. We argue that foresight and planning can empower faculty, staff, and students. It all revolves around fostering a positive, effective, responsive, and resilient academic community.
In our final segment: "Shaping Higher Education's Future by Navigating the Intersection of Politics, Ideology, and Money”, we delve into the intricate interplay of politics, ideology, and financial considerations in shaping the future of higher education. We believe that higher education has an educational role to play to gain the confidence of the public. But also, academia has the duty to constantly redevelop and re-envision itself.
