I firmly believe that we must do our part to educate the next generation of scientific leaders. Recently, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of Pfizer School of Science, a program designed to do just that. Since its launch, we’ve welcomed more than 6,000 students from New York City schools to our headquarters in Hudson Yards. These students got a hands-on, interactive learning experience on a variety of life science subjects and had conversations with colleagues about career discovery. Our aim with the program was not only to introduce science to young learners, but also to engage students from diverse backgrounds, particularly underrepresented communities that might not traditionally have explored a career path in the life sciences. In some cases, this meant modifying our coursework to accommodate diverse needs, such as customizing classes to suit different learning abilities and language capabilities. It’s always fun to see which topics become students’ favorites. Overall, our two most popular subjects have been Microbiology, where students explore microorganisms under a microscope and learn how to grow bacteria in a petri dish; and Central Dogma, where students extract DNA from strawberries and survey their phenotypes to understand how DNA influences people's traits. It’s exciting to think that these classes might have been the first spark for some future microbiologists and geneticists! I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the educators, administrators and students who have been a part of this remarkable journey, as well as Yolanda Courtney Lyle, Giovanna Tomat-Kelly, Stephen Fascianella, and the rest of the amazing Pfizer team for making this program such a success in its first year. As Pfizer embarks on its 175th year of innovating science to help patients, I look forward to seeing that same spirit of innovation reflected in NYC’s young residents when they visit Pfizer School of Science. So proud to be a part of this initiative to inspire young folks to learn about science and consider a career in STEM. Cheers to another year of making a difference at the Pfizer School of Science! Elizabeth Chang, Francine Djonovic, Giovanna Tomat-Kelly, Stephen Fascianella
Dr Ezakial Napolean R, Professor of Veterinary Gynecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary College, Namakkal, TN,India. Science involving research and development with innovation will be an essential part in grooming the next generation. The fundamental sciences being the foundation but recent advances change from time to time with modifications. The ccconcept of interactive learning really triggers all the vital senses of the hypothalamus thus leading to a creative hypothesis and new technologies which gets modified then and there. My best wishes and salute to the scientists for grooming the scientists off the coming era.
The Pfizer School of Science!!! Next up: The CocaCola School of Nutrition
Some departments at Groton's research center were doing this 40 years ago. For example, Operation Bridge with Saint Bernards High School as well as the SMART (Science and Math Are Really Terrific) program. Welcome to the game.
It’s great to see the young scientists in the building 🧑🏻🔬👩🏽🔬👨🔬🧪🔬🧬
A powerful example of value based leadership that will inspire a new generation of minds. Diverse minds create new ideas which lead to groundbreaking performance. Thank you Albert Bourla for leading from the front.
What an incredible initiative! The Pfizer School of Science is not just educating but inspiring the next generation of scientific leaders. It's heartening to see the focus on engaging students from diverse backgrounds, paving the way for a more inclusive future in the life sciences. Kudos to you and the entire Pfizer team for making such a meaningful impact in just one year. Here's to many more years of sparking curiosity and nurturing talent!
Albert, your believes are 110% correct! I’m a professor that teaches future doctors, nurses, physician assistants, etc. from diverse and disadvantaged communities! My students will love to visit your headquarters, too! It will allow them to share their experiences with other family members and their communities and suggest careers in the health Care industry!
Maybe you shoukd expand this people pipeline.
The Lititz PA site was also heavily involved in these efforts in the late 90s-early 2000s within our local school system, providing science demonstrations, educational opportunities (Woods Hole Institute for example), special teacher educational and training opportunities, and scholarships to local school students. Once a year the scientists on site would have a Science Fair inside the facility where loca school students from around the area could come in and learn about science and careers in science. The major players were Darren Lewis, Bobette Williams, and me (MCS PHARMA CONSULTING, LLC) as I recall. Please tag in anyone in case I've inadvertently left anyone out with my sketchy-at-best memory. I have a rare recording from a presser held at the site on 8-16-2001 recognizing the efforts of the team and its impact on local government and businesses given by then plant manager Sharon Timmis - but I can't figure out how to post it. But here is a picture from the event where Sharon presented a check to support our local school system.
