#Topics The US Wants China to Start Talking About AI Weapons [ad_1] When US president Joe Biden meets with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in the San Francisco Bay Area this week, the pair will have a long list of matters to discuss, including the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.Behind the scenes at the APEC summit, however, US officials hope to strike up a dialog with China about placing guardrails around military use of artificial intelligence, with the ultimate goal of lessening the potential risks that rapid adoption—and reckless use—of the technology might bring.“We have a collective interest in reducing the potential risks from the deployment of unreliable AI applications” because of risks of unintended escalation, says a senior State Department official familiar with recent efforts to broach the issue and who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We very much hope to have a further conversation with China on this issue.”Biden’s meeting with Xi this week may provide momentum for more military dialog. “We're really looking forward to hopefully a positive leaders meeting,” the State Department official says. “We can really understand from that conversation, where our possible bilateral arms control and non-proliferation conversation could pro...

🚨 News Alert 🚨 As Replicator is (finally) getting off the ground, Congress is pushing the Army to build a specific branch to oversee robotics. The Army is pushing back—and I agree with the Army. Uncrewed systems are a tool, with which every service member needs to be familiar and know how to use—like a machine gun or radio. Consolidating the use under a branch will actually lead to long term unpreparedness for the force. Russia is gaining ground ver slowly in its spring offensive in Ukraine. The United Kingdom’s intelligence service suggests that China is providing lethal aid to Russia for the war. China is retaliating to heightened tensions with the west with its own sanctions and restrictions. It has also run a large exercise encircling Taiwan to demonstrate its ability to ‘seize power’ quickly, less than a week after Taiwan’s new westward-looking president assumes office. There’s been a fair amount of activity in M&A, reverse mergers, and VC funding. At the recent Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) summit in Seoul, around 60 nations, including the U.S., endorsed a "blueprint for action" to ensure the ethical use of AI in military applications. The document calls for maintaining human oversight, conducting risk assessments, and preventing the proliferation of AI-enabled weapons of mass destruction. China's decision not to endorse the blueprint underscores differing global viewpoints. The initiative will be a key topic at the UN General Assembly in October. #ResponsibleAI #MilitaryInnovation #GlobalGovernance https://lnkd.in/gvCm4_B7

At a recent global summit on military AI guidelines, China opted out of a blueprint signed by 60 other nations that promotes responsible and ethical use of AI in warfare. The guidelines emphasize human control over AI-driven military applications and aim to prevent the use of AI in weapons of mass destruction. China's decision not to sign the agreement raises concerns about global AI governance in military contexts. What are the implications? #AIEthics #ResponsibleAI #MilitaryAI #GlobalAI #AIRegulation https://lnkd.in/ed5faS6A
