Building vibrant and engaged communities

About us

We envision Seattle as a place where everyone – from teachers and artists to seniors on fixed incomes to young families – can set down roots and thrive. Our history is rooted in community. What started in Capitol Hill in the 1970s was the idea that everyone should live affordably in their neighborhood, in their community. Today, we own and maintain nearly 50 apartment buildings across the Seattle area, providing safe and affordable apartments to over 2,000 residents. We strive to develop amenities that not only meet the housing needs of our residents but also serve the community around them.

  • Seattle is growing and changing, but we can do it in a way that prioritizes the inclusion and the needs of the community. We believe that preserving existing affordable housing stock is one of the most effective ways to maintain affordable housing—take a look at Belltown. Over the past decade, Community Roots Housing has renovated more than 250 apartments in historic Belltown buildings, ensuring they remain safe, affordable homes for generations to come. From the Bremer and John Carney to the soon-to-be-completed Devonshire and upcoming work at the Fleming, we’re proud to protect both the unique character of Belltown and the housing it provides for those who need it most. This year, we’re completing the Devonshire’s transformation: seismic upgrades, modern systems, improved energy efficiency, and fresh interiors across 62 affordable homes. In 2025, a federal grant will fund renovations at the Fleming, a 107-year-old building on 4th and Bell St. Preservation isn’t just about honoring the past—it’s about creating a future where everyone has access to a quality, affordable home.

  • Unexpected job loss, unplanned vehicle repairs, or health emergencies can happen to anyone—a reality that was underlined over the last five years. For those living on low incomes, these experiences can often force them into deep financial crisis. Supportive service referrals, like those delivered by our Resident Services program, provide a critical buffer from circumstances that might otherwise lead to housing instability or even homelessness. • Did you know in the early 1940s, the Seattle Housing Authority established Yesler Terrace as the first public housing development in the state and the first racially integrated public housing in the country? In 2023, the 13th & Fir building opened its doors and brings 156 affordable homes to the Yesler Terrace neighborhood, across the street from Bailey-Gatzert Elementary School. Community Roots Housing and SCIDpda collaborated to address displacement risks while prioritizing families, with larger units and access to childcare and retail spaces on the ground floor. Today, 13th & Fir offers new, current, and previously displaced residents convenient access to jobs, school, healthcare, transit, and opportunity. Together, we’re ensuring that Yesler Terrace continues to thrive as a vibrant, inclusive community.

  • We are proud to announce the launch of our 2024 Thriving Neighbors end-of-year campaign—a vital fundraising initiative designed to elevate and enhance our Resident Services Program. At Community Roots Housing, we understand that housing is just the foundation for a stable life. Our Resident Services program has successfully introduced: • A new, customized Resident Services model for on-site programming and deeper engagement at six of our buildings. • The Housing Stabilization Program, delivering one-time rental assistance and tailored support to help residents secure their housing. • The Resident Advisory Council, empowering residents to engage in decision-making and leadership roles.
