The U.S. has surpassed 8 million coronavirus cases after adding more than 69,000 new coronavirus infections Friday, the highest one-day total since late July, according to Johns Hopkins University data. An epidemiologist tells The New York Times the U.S. is "headed in the wrong direction," although deaths have not spiked in recent weeks. More than 1,000 current and former CDC officials have signed an open letter saying "the absence of national leadership on Covid-19 is unprecedented and dangerous" and urging the CDC to take the lead during the crisis.
Meanwhile, in global virus developments:
- The World Health Organization says about 80% of European countries are seeing COVID-19 cases grow.
- Paris and several other French cities are imposing overnight curfews.
- London is banning people from different households from mixing indoors. The ban also affects Essex, York and other areas of the U.K.
