Mounting bills and second jobs are some of the new realities described by the people who screen airline passengers in the U.S. They have been working without pay since the government shut down in mid-December. Some have said they're looking for new jobs. Many also mention the generosity and support of their communities and workplaces for trying to ease their stress while they go without paychecks.

I think that the shutdown is affecting the nation as a whole, some TSA workers are trying to fine other jobs while going through this crisis and others are hanging in there to the long haul. The ones that are hanging in there are still doing their jobs professionally and waiting for this crisis to end.

TSA Federal Security Directors (FSD) continually meet with airport authorities and airlines nationwide to ensure resources are optimized, efforts to consolidate operations are actively managed, and that the screening and security of the traveling public are never compromised. Currently, Miami International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Washington-Dulles International Airport are exercising their contingency plans to uphold aviation security standards. FSDs, in concert with the airport & servicing airlines will announce when lane closures occur so passengers can plan accordingly. TSA will reallocate screening officers on a national basis to meet staffing shortages that cannot be addressed locally.

I realize it's been a while... as you know this shutdown is beginning to take a toll on the federal workforce. As such, I wouldn't be surprised if many folks start exploring new opportunities... I am trying to broaden my knowledge base and will start exploring the cyber threat analysis field - which I know is greatly expanding and will undoubtedly become more critical in the future. If anyone can recommend open-source, free courses on this subject I would greatly appreciate it!
At TSA at Denver International Airport I had security officers of all ages working for me. Many older officers, including me, entered the aviation security field specifically because of the trauma our nation faced on 9/11/2001. For some of the youngest officers, however, the terrorism of 9/11 was a historical event they learned about in school. When I (foolishly) asked one of my youngest officers if she remembered where she was when the towers fell she answered "Yes. Kindergarten."
