The case for giving heatwaves names
The last decade was the hottest on record and in the past few months alone, heat records were shattered around the globe. By the turn of the century, heat waves may affect 75% of people on the planet. They may not rip the roofs off buildings like hurricanes, but their effects are no less pernicious. We have been naming tropical storms and hurricanes since the 1950s. Naming heatwaves will create a similar culture of awareness and galvanize resources to protect and save lives.
