US virus cases top 1 million
Updated 4 years ago
Known cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. topped 1 million — about a third of global cases — as some governors began reopening businesses and the White House issued guidance on testing to help counter the contagion. While closures and stay-at-home orders have sent the jobless rate soaring in recent weeks, prompting a push to restart economies, health experts warn that testing capacity is insufficient to guard against a new wave of infections.
More U.S. updates:
- Georgia, Texas, Alaska, Montana, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado and South Carolina are among the states starting to ease shutdown orders.
- General Motors Co., Fiat Chrysler and Ford will resume some car production in Detroit from May 18 following talks with unions.
- The first decision on challenges to stay-at-home orders has been delivered, with an Illinois judge ruling Governor J.B. Pritzker’s directive violated the liberty of an individual who sued him.
