Conducting research during chaotic times
- [Cory] We've entered an era of global chaos and upheaval. A pandemic and multiple variants have lasted years and turned our lives upside down. We've seen the pandemic overlaid by wars in places we thought would remain peaceful, and natural disasters beyond what we could have imagined. How do we maintain our focus and our lives while we feel tectonic shifts beneath our feet? And all the while we're supposed to do our work, our work at home or in the office. Do we even want to be with our coworkers in person, or is that frightening or just plain unnecessary? And what happened to our coworkers? There is no stability there either as people shift between jobs like never before. And maybe our company is short-staffed, so we have to work harder now than we did in the old days. I'm here to say that it's possible to find your balance and continue to do UX research, while simultaneously figuring out how to take care of yourself. We'll talk about planning flexibly for your research, even when you don't know what impact the next new cycle is going to have on your life or your research plans. We'll also talk about what you should think about when actually doing your research, and how to balance remote and in-person activities while maintaining a safe and healthy working environment. And we'll talk about the importance of self-care, as well as what you should do as an empathetic researcher who perhaps carries not only your own stresses, but also the anxieties from those around you as well. I'm Cory Lebson, author of "The UX Careers Handbook", and a long-time UX researcher who's been working hard these past years to maintain balance and continue to do good research in these crazy times. Join me on LinkedIn Learning as we talk about what you can do to maintain your balance and your research objectives.
