My interest in Artificial Intelligence led me to the Symbolic Systems Program which integrates ideas from Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, and Linguistics. My interest in Artificial Intelligence led me to the Symbolic Systems Program which integrates ideas from Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, and Linguistics. Yet I was unsatisfied with the pure symbolic manipulation approaches to AI dominant at the time, and felt that intelligence needed to be embodied in the physical world to ultimately have meaning. Thus, I turned my focus towards robotics and embodied intelligence and created my own Robotics focus within the program and worked closely with Nils Nilsson, an early innovator in AI and robotics.

I published my first academic papers and reports while an undergraduate doing independent research on autonomous robotics and map building in dynamic settings. In my junior year I entered a "co-terminal program" to complete both my BA and MS concurrently in 5 years.

I was one of the Managers of Terra, a student run Co-Op for 70 students. I set up systems to organize cooking and cleaning of the co-op by the students on a daily basis.

Projects

  • NASA Tensegrity Robotics Toolkit (NTRT) Open Source simulator

NTRT is an open source simulator for tensegrity robots based on the Bullet physics engine. I built the original versions and then led its ongoing development with the help of students and volunteers. The hardest part of this project was working through the multi-year legal process at NASA to get permission to release it as open source. <grin>
