Archer Aviation ( #Archer ) and #SouthwestAirlines (Southwest) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop operational plans for electric #airtaxi networks utilising Archer's #eVTOL aircraft at #California airports where Southwest operates. Archer Aviation is a manufacturer of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Southwest is the Golden State's largest air carrier, operating at 14 airports across the state. The Archer Midnight #aircraft is designed to transform urban travel, replacing 60-to-90-minute car commutes with estimated 10-to-20-minute electric air taxi flights. The goal of Archer's aircraft is to offer a safe, low-noise, cost-competitive transportation option with no direct emissions. The two companies intend to collaborate on a concept of operations that lays the foundation for integrated electric air taxi networks to support California airports and the surrounding communities that Southwest serves. This collaboration will include partnering with Southwest employees and respective unions, including SWAPA, to maintain and improve efficient operations. This is a key step toward potentially offering Southwest customers an airport transport service that saves time by streamlining the door-to-door passenger journey.

We're pleased to announce the launch of Honeywell Aerospace Technologies Regulatory Readiness Level (RRL), a new scale to assess aircraft maturity toward airworthiness approval. The RRL divides the Type Certification (TC) and Operational Approval processes into nine levels, clearly illustrating the progress of the TC project. This pioneering work by Pulkit Agrawal offers the first standard for discussing and comparing new aircraft. Nice work on this white paper on the adoption of AI to power the growth of part, asset and plane lifecycle optimization tools. It’s always good to connect career friends like John Maggiore of Boeing AHM fame. While forming their chain, SkyThread realized that many industrial giants, digital firms, and others would build individual solutions to tackle one or more aspects of the business problem. It is disappointing to see this outcome. There are many bad incentives in play here that ultimately will not result in the safe carriage of the flying public. After the 737 Max debacle, I had hoped that the industry and our stakeholders would have approached this situation differently. Considering all the near misses at airports, quality challenges in commercial aircraft manufacturing, and the need for investment in aviation talent and infrastructure, it is disappointing that the lobbying of a fundamentally flawed aircraft architecture would get so much emphasis in our legislative process. The FAA needs additional resourcing of people and technology for existing FAA obligations including continuing airworthiness of the fleet and management of the airspace. I hope more stakeholders, investors and employees do their own homework about the economics and scalability of the designs at the core of the EVTOL industry. As always, this important topic is masterfully covered by Elan Head in The Air Current. Bravo for continuing to set the bar high for other journalists.

Another great Revolution.Aero event is well underway! Some key takeaways from yesterday's Day One Operations panel with Altaport, National Business Aviation Association, Skyports Infrastructure, and Wisk: - "Day one" is a misnomer. Meaningful VTOL pax/cargo operations have been happening for over a half-century in various locations. While the introduction of DEP will be revolutionary in the long run, it is only an evolutionary step in the short run, and "day one" operations will mirror today's light-duty helicopter operations, e.g., short tour flights, NYC-JFK transfers, etc. - Aside from aircraft certification, the linchpin to day one operations is infrastructure preparedness, specifically charging capacity. No changes needed to airspace management or even customer/community acceptance in the short term. - Looking beyond day one, infrastructure remains a key unlock for a broader value proposition. Multi-modal trips are suboptimal and heavily negate the value of AAM, so the closer the infrastructure is to true origins and destinations, the more value AAM provides.
