Safdie Architects has announced the expansion of its leadership team with the appointment of Jeffrey Huggins to Senior Partner. With over two decades at the Boston-based firm, Huggins has contributed significantly to many of the firm’s most programmatically complex projects, including the technical innovation of skybridges connecting high-rise towers. Notable projects include the Surbana Jurong Campus, Raffles City Chonqing, and Marina Bay Sands and its forthcoming expansion.  Huggins joins fellow Senior Partners Charu Kokate, Christopher Mulvey, Jaron Lubin, and Sean Scensor. Together, they work closely alongside Founding Partner Moshe Safdie to carry forward the firm’s humanist, values-based practice.

The fall issue of Oculus, AIA New York | Center for Architecture's quarterly magazine, looks at how architects and planners are finding unique ways to improve urban livability, from adding community areas to projects, enhancing accessibility, and, for example, RKTB's One Sullivan Place, a new residential building with affordable apartments that cantilevers over neighboring buildings.

User Research Case Study Understanding New Yorkers in Relation to Construction by Krystal Ebron The NYC Department of Design & Construction (DDC) provides communities with new or renovated structures such as firehouses, libraries, police precincts, courthouses, and senior centers. They also offer sidewalks, street reconstruction, water mains, sewers, and pedestrian ramps—quality infrastructure essential for a healthy, resilient city. The DDC wanted our help finding ways to better inform the people of NYC about the construction going on around the area. Through observational fieldwork, diary studies, and co-design sessions, we identified ways they could better curate information through various touchpoints, increase awareness about ongoing projects to alleviate inconveniences, and more carefully consider the needs of people with mobility-related accessibility needs. Earlier this week, Eric Parry Architects' Director, Robert Kennett contributed to a lively discussion at London Build Expo on the evolution of London's skyline, and how to successfully incorporate new skyscrapers into the Capital. Below are some key takeaways from the panellists: • Seventeen years ago, there wasn't a strategic framework for tall buildings in the city. The policy framework has now changed radically, as has the nature of tall buildings and their servicing requirements. • One of the most important elements of a tall building is how it relates to the ground with activation across all frontages. • We don't want to take a building's whole "coat" off every 20 years, so choosing all materials carefully and considering optimisation of the core is essential in considering any future adaptations. • Urban greening and providing a mixture of amenities for different communities is essential in creating humane buildings. From publicly accessible roof gardens to retail and workspace, this variety of uses ensures that buildings appeal to a more diverse range of people from workers to those who live and spend leisure time in the city.  #LondonBuild2024

Designed by Architecture Research Office (ARO), these groundbreaking schools—part of the Alloy Block mixed-use development—set a new standard for energy efficiency, comfort, and resilience in education. Consuming less than a third of the energy of a typical NYC public school, this project highlights the power of Passive House principles in creating healthy, high-performance spaces for learning. Sionas Architecture PC has joined GSAPC (Gregory Switzer Architecture PC) with Gregory Switzer as Principal Owner. Switzer founded GSAPC in New York City in 2003 “in response to the ever-changing architecture and interiors marketplace.” He describes GSAPC as a small to mid sized, boutique practice whose projects include high-end residential work including new multifamily buildings, government/city agencies, trendy bars and restaurants, and adaptive re-use projects, such as converting banks and warehouses to apartments and retail spaces. Switzer is the current president of the NYC chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Formed in 1985 by Principal Architect Paul Sionas, Sionas Architecture has worked on a great variety of project types and sizes in New Jersey and New York, winning awards for Historic Preservation, Inclusive Housing and Design. The staffs of both firms have joined as one, and are extremely excited and enthusiastic about the possibilities that this brings. In addition to Architecture and Interior Design, the firm now offers Landscape Architecture and Professional Planning. Professional Architecture licenses are held in 12 states.

Experiments in Brooklyn have shown that turning townhouses into passive houses can maintain a perfect indoor temperature of 72-73 degrees for five days without electricity, even in February. Fresh air circulates constantly, proving the effectiveness of this approach. 🔷 Holistic Approach: Energy savings should not be viewed myopically. Combining strategies, like upgrading HVAC systems and improving insulation, is crucial. 🔷 Cost Efficiency: Many spend millions on new HVAC systems only to lose efficiency due to poor insulation. Underlining KPF’s dedication to precise and contextual architecture, a feature by architecture critic Justin Davidson for New York Magazine praises the adaptive reuse of One Madison Avenue for its modern, flexible, and “understated” design. The article highlights the adaptive reuse project as the latest iteration in the evolution of Manhattan office architecture. KPF’s renewal scheme for One Madison Avenue retains an existing 1950s building and adds a new tower above. The design required delicately inserting a new concrete core to the base building that rises to support the new tower, while a steel truss supports the new tower and transfers its weight to megacolumns strategically placed in the original structure. “All that deft engineering yielded a stack of admirably open interiors, uncluttered by columns, luxuriantly ventilated to post-COVID standards, and readily adaptable to whatever notions of contemporary office culture a tenant might bring,” says Davidson. KPF’s design intervention carefully considers the complex’s iconic clock tower, added by Napoleon LeBrun in 1909, by stepping away from the street and deferring to the monument in height and materiality.
