The most powerful companies in DeFi aren't the ones you think they are. Everyone obsesses over DEX volume and protocol TVL. Meanwhile, 1inch and CowSwap are quietly routing 40%+ of all DeFi trades and nobody seems to care. Most people don't realize they haven't directly interacted with a DEX in months. Every swap goes through an aggregator now, scanning 50+ liquidity pools, running thousands of simulations, and choosing the optimal route in under a second. Users think they're picking a venue. They're not. The aggregator is. Here's what changed: Liquidity fragmented across chains and protocols. The same token pair now exists on a dozen different DEXes, each with different pricing. Without aggregation, you're statistically losing money on every trade. So aggregators became essential infrastructure. 1inch's Pathfinder can split a single trade across 10+ venues to minimize slippage. CowSwap batches all orders together and runs auctions where "solvers" compete to match them, eliminating MEV entirely. The tech is legitimately brilliant. But the power consolidation is concerning. When every major wallet integrates the same aggregator, that aggregator controls liquidity flow. They decide which protocols get volume and which get bypassed. In 2024, several DEXes quietly reported their pools being systematically ignored, not because they were inefficient, but because they weren't in the aggregator's preferred routing set. If your protocol isn't optimized for aggregator integration, you're invisible to users. And for builders integrating these systems, you're not just adding a convenience feature. You're inheriting trust assumptions, security boundaries, and routing logic that could expose users to exploits if you don't validate it properly. The aggregation layer is where the real power sits now. So are we actually decentralizing finance, or just moving the gatekeepers one abstraction layer higher? Genuinely curious what people think about this.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has disclosed that unknown cyber actors broke into its systems and stole account data for a small subset of its customers. "Criminals targeted our customer support agents overseas," the company said in a statement. "They used cash offers to convince a small group of insiders to copy data in our customer support tools for less than 1% of Coinbase monthly transacting users." The end goal of the campaign was to put together a list of customers who they contact by masquerading as Coinbase and deceiving them into handing over their cryptocurrency assets. Coinbase said the threat actors then unsuccessfully attempted to extort the company for $20 million on May 11, 2025, by claiming to have information about certain customer accounts as well as internal documents. In a statement shared with Fortune, Coinbase said the compromised customer agents worked in India and have all been fired. https://lnkd.in/g24pw6Ct
