Trying to hire a junior to mid-level engineer in Scotland with great benefits and remote working is hard... https://lnkd.in/eQNHVqGR Not because the role isn't attractive (you'd be working on exciting large-scale system infrastructure challenges writing code with Golang - 1,000's of Kubernetes clusters, 10,000s of cloud VMs) or because the team are all crazy (they're thought leaders in their field including multiple upstream Kubernetes contributors from 3 continents!)... you got me... maybe there's a little crazy - but only the good kind! No... my challenge is whether this AI-generated image to go with my LinkedIn post makes any sense! I never have much luck with images containing generated text. Even using prompts like "spell check any text" or as is the case with this one "do not include any text" doesn't seem to work. Not to mention, I know what a Scottish Terrier is... but that "thing" in the bottom right looks more like an angry, tartan-wearing Capybara. Well that was a trip, decided to move timwise.co.uk to 0x5.uk and go all in on the nerd chic.... out come the yaks and gremlins of internet infrastructure. Github pages redirections broke. GoDaddy can't redirect anything but the root path. Moved the old domain to dnssimple to fix that... you don't get https redirection without the £30/month plan and it's not obvious. Buttondown automated rss-to-email choked, couldn't re-enable it because the paid plan had stopped working so had to re-upgrade that. Finally got almost everything working and redirecting again now, apart from the http -> https redirection with github pages that just seems to be broken, support ticket raised... So much for zero downtime! Imagine if it was a domain that actually mattered, like an ecommerce site! Thank goodness as a professional dev I usually have DevOps and infrastructure experts to hand!

78% of the candidates that I have submitted for live vacancies at Kando have been invited to interview🎯 This is a stat that I am genuinely proud of. I am even more proud that it has been achieved in a DevOps market which is far from black and white. How has it been achieved👇 ✅ A collaborative process. Discussing a client's problems first and building a profile around those problems. ✅ Understanding each client's unique definition of a "DevOps Engineer" - this one has been a big learning curve. ✅ Consistently challenging clients on how realistic their search is. Not fun in the short-term, vital in the long-term. ✅ Relentless shortlisting. Nobody likes being told that they're not a fit by a recruiter. But, shovelling every relevant CV is not a service. What this has meant for my customers👇 ⭐ Less time spent reviewing CVs ⭐ Candidates being able to deal in expectation rather than vague hope ⭐ Quick, painless processes without 2 or 3 re-specs Not all of the process have been perfect. Not every interview has been a slam dunk. But, if my job is to save people time and deliver the best possible candidate for the job. This feels like a strong indicator that it's working. #recruitment #recruiting #freelance #zzp #interim #devops

I've been exploring the ABP Boilerplate Framework recently, and I’m really impressed with how it simplifies building modular and maintainable applications. From microservices to domain-driven design and multi-tenancy, ABP covers it all. One criticism of "strict TDD" is that you're not allowed to add tests after the code's complete. I don't recognise this version of "strict" TDD. If the tests I'm left with from TDD-ing code aren't giving me that warm, fuzzy feeling, I'll explore more, maybe write more tests (or refactor to data-driven or property-based tests if it really has to work, or grab a colleague and do guided inspections if it really, really has to work, or even a proof of correctness if it really, really, really has to work. Whatever gives me sufficient warm fuzzies, basically). As far as I'm aware, after ~25 years of doing and teaching TDD, that's allowed. Not just allowed, in fact, but recommended. 5/5 on Tripadvisor. Would go again. And likewise, if I think, going forward, I don't need some of these regression tests, I'll remove them or consolidate etc. The tests that drive our design often correspond to good regression tests, but certainly not always. More work usually needs to be done. Once the design's in place from TDD-ing the code, we're in the realms of something called "testing", where tests we add are expected to pass first time (though they might not, and that's a good reason to do it). Oh, and this is probably a good time to mention mutation testing. I'll routinely mutation test new or changed code and if that throws up gaps in my regression tests, I'll fill them.

The state of software requirements is alarmingly inadequate. After analysing hundreds of thousands of requirements that was the key takeaway from our recent podcast with Colin Hammond (ScopeMaster Ltd). Poor requirements not only lead to ballooning project budgets but also seem to be an accepted norm in the software industry. This stands in stark contrast to other sectors, like engineering, where precise blueprints and plans are fundamental to every project’s success. #SoftwareQuality #SoftwareTesting #QualityAssurance #QualityEngineering #Testing

The future belongs to the curious. The explorers. The 'how does this whole thing work' nerds. Why? Because they'll be conducting the AI symphony while you're still tuning your one-string banjo. Here’s 4 signs you're on the endangered list: 1. Your knowledge of DevOps doesn’t go beyond merging your own PR 2. You've never SSH'd into a server (it's not a disease, I promise) 3. Your debugging process is 'console.log' and pray 4. You think scaling means adding more if-else statements Embrace curiosity. Break things. Ask 'why' until your team wants to mute you on Slack.
