Paul Barham shared thisVery appreciative of the close collaboration that Gemini has with many teams in Amin's organization - - the hardware and low level infrastructure stacks that we have access to at Google means that we have a huge advantage in time to train large LLMs. And there are so many amazing things coming down the pipeline.Paul Barham shared thisToday, at Google IO, we announced Trillium our sixth generation of Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to accelerate a broad range of ML workloads. We have been designing custom hardware for Machine Learning applications for more than a decade and Trillium is our biggest leap to date. Relative to the previous generation TPU v5e, Trillium delivers: - 4.7x the floating point performance - 2x the ICI network bandwidth - 2x the HBM capacity and bandwidth While all of the above are impressive in insolation, we are particularly proud of having done so with 67% more energy efficiency than the previous generation. Built to be natively multimodal, it can understand and operate across text, images, audio, video and code - and achieves state-of-the-art performance across many tasks. It's a lot more than just a promotion, it's acceptance -- an embrace by the community I've come to cherish. Thank you for that! Special thanks to those who saw the potential, from the very beginning and until the very end. I am forever grateful to my advisors in particular. Thanks to all those who supported – the known and the unknown among you. Without that support, it would be a very lonely journey indeed. From mentors, to colleagues, to friends and family. You were there to guide, listen, and nurture. Thanks to the College of Computing at Georgia Tech, School of Computer Science for such an amazing support structure for your junior faculty, stemming both bottom up from the colleagues and top down from the School, College, and Institutional leadership! Lastly, tenure is truly a celebration of my students, my Systems for Artificial Intelligence Lab, and their dedication to the technical craft, to research, to impact. The article covers the 'origin story' for how the effort began, its extension from inference to training at datacenter scale, codesign around Transformers, and the journey to training and serving Google's Gemini foundation models as well as those for many external partners through our Cloud TPUs. Paul Barham liked thisPaul Barham liked thisWe’re presenting the first AI to solve International Mathematical Olympiad problems at a silver medalist level.🥈 Here’s why this is important. ↓ 🧮 The IMO is the world’s most prestigious annual math competition, presenting six problems to participants involving: geometry, algebra, number theory, and combinatorics. Our hybrid system consists of two breakthrough models: ➕AlphaProof, which can generate complex proofs using Lean, a math programming language. This allows answers to be formally verified for correctness. ➕AlphaGeometry 2: an improved version of our previous system to tackle geometry. Trained on more synthetic data than its predecessor, it managed to solve this year’s IMO Problem 4 within 19 seconds. We’re excited to see how our new system could help accelerate AI-powered mathematics, from quickly completing elements of proofs to eventually discovering new knowledge for us - and unlocking further progress towards AGI.
