We are incredibly excited to announce our investments in two companies paving the way for the multimodal data stack! We are thrilled to partner with Eventual and LanceDB as they revolutionize the way that multimodal data is processed and stored in the AI era. Eventual is announcing their seed round, led by CRV, as well as their Series A, led by Felicis, bringing their total funding to $30M. It's been a privilege to work with Sammy Sidhu and Jay Chia as part of this journey. The team at LanceDB is also announcing their $30M Series A, led by Theory Ventures, with continued support from CRV. We are honored that Chang She and Lei Xu chose us as their partners at the seed. It's been amazing to see folks across the data and AI ecosystem choose to store their data in LanceDB and process it with Daft. Teams at Midjourney Runway Amazon Essential AI Together AI are already moving onto the multimodal data stack. More to come!

With RL techniques like GRPO, it’s become easy to fine-tune small models to outperform foundation models on vertical tasks. We’re open sourcing Osmosis-Apply-1.7B: a small model that merges code (similar to Cursor’s instant apply) better than foundation models. Links in comments! Using foundation models for high specificity, low complexity tasks like code merging can be overkill - instead, it’s better to use a specialized model instead for higher performance and latency. We fine-tuned the model on 100K real-world code commits where the model needs to merge a code edit snippet into an original code snippet. On the test dataset (subset of CommitPackFT), foundation model performance ranged between 0.77-0.93 reward score. In comparison, Osmosis-Apply-1.7B achieved a 0.98 reward score - while also being 3X-5X more affordable than the next cheaper model AND ~10X faster! Why this matters: the best AI agents use multiple models to ensure task specialization and reliability at scale - on top of cost and latency benefits as well. Excited to announce our investment in Alta Resource Technologies alongside Leonardo Banchik (Voyager Ventures) with participation from Orion Resource Partners, Overture Ventures, and WovenEarth Ventures. Rare earths are critical in products from magnets to ceramics and it's important for the US to develop its own supply chain. While the US has some of the best rare earth resources, separating them has historically proven expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Alta through it's computationally designed and optimized proteins allows the US to bring back rare earth production with a cleaner, lower capex, and lower opex solution - and that's just the beginning.
