🔊OC Employers! 🧠 Did you know that nearly 6 million American’s are currently living with Alzheimer’s Disease? The number of those diagnosed here in Orange County has doubled in these last 10 years. Even if someone is not directly impacted by ALZ, chances are they know someone who is. Millions of caregivers are full time professionals, and the stress of balancing caregiving and work can significantly impact one's stress levels and overall well-being. Although these numbers are staggering, it illustrates to employers how vital it is to be strategic about available awareness resources and support offered to employees not only affected by dementia, but also interested in learning more about it. The Alzheimer’s Association offers FREE Education Programs and Awareness Trainings to local organizations in our community, and would love the opportunity to speak to your staff on one of the below topics. These programs are designed to support those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as those interested in brain health and caregiving. What's in your leadership Library? Not your kindle or your nook or on your podcast line up. What printed books are in your possession that help you with leadership? Tomorrow I start leading an annual LeaderShip Cohort for terrific ongoing client partner Oregon Resource Association. In fact, this is the 5th annual Cohort ~ and here are 6 observational thoughts. 1. When you focus on the people in the room, not those who aren't, everyone has a better experience. The size of audience has little to do with possible action and impact. Those present at the present 🎁 and deserve full focus. 2. Experimenting with format variables is highly likely and helpful - i.e. number of sessions, format, length, space. We started with 3 sessions, then 3 again, then 4, then 6 - and this year it's 5. Partially to celebrate the 5th year of the series. The registered students will tell you what's working vocally and behaviorally. 3. Be willing to add a group and perhaps a 2nd session. We added a 2nd cohort group [max 30 per group] the very first year due to enthusiastic response! Same day, 2 different times, everybody in. That may have also boosted further registration. 4. Have a focused area of growth and be sure to build sessions ecosystemically. A theme is another way of stating this: what's the purpose of the gathering for growth? Having a theme jump starts the connection within the group, since the purpose is aligned from the start. Ours is LeaderShip, and this year I've chosen 5 books to utilize for the 5 classes. 5. Enjoy the organic nature of adjustment as you progress. In every class there are revelations! Respond to those and use them to enhance the future classes. Reference them so that people know they're being heard and their contribution is fuel for the group. If you teach online and in person series, what lessons and observations have you found lightbulby? QBQ! Musings: Let's Answer Our Phones Starting ... NOW. I’m not a call center or phone system expert, but gee whiz, it’s 2025 ... can we do better? I made a simple (ha!) call to Kaiser Permanente to request a prescription be mailed, as I'd ordered. I received a text saying it was now ready for PICK-UP. Let’s see what happened next … At every turn during a 14-minute "phone tree Hell" experience, while attempting to reach a real live flesh and blood human, I was warned that if I was having a “life-threatening or mental/drug crisis, to call 911.” Five times I heard that. Finally, by pure luck—I'm not sure I could do it again or tell you how to do it—I reached Chad, an actual pharmacist. I asked Chad if my non-urgent product could be mailed to me. His response? “Hmm, I think that can be done, but you’ll need to call the mail center to arrange it.” Aaaggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! 😂 Automated phone tree systems are no longer novel or unique. What they really are is the antithesis of good #CustomerService. You'd think the organizational world would've figured that out by now. Maybe they don't care. 🤷‍♂️ Idea: Let's return to answering our phones, taking care of paying customers, and making the world less stressful. Last Wednesday I went to my first TEDxSanDiego event. I learned a valuable lesson. I was there to watch my friend Stacey Lauren give a TED talk! Stacey is one of the most inspiring people I've ever met. Last year she said she wanted to give a TED talk and in less than 12 months she made it happen. How did she do that!!?? Stacey possesses a special skill that makes her extraordinary. The good news is that we can all cultivate it. Stacey's secret superpower is this: The gap between her saying she wants do something and her actually doing it is microscopic. She doesn't let resistance, self-doubt, and fear slow her down. She still feels all those things (she's the first to admit it), but she takes immediate action and doesn't let anything stop her. This is very different than how most people approach their goals. Many of us mere mortals say we want to do something, get all fired up about it, and then procrastinate for months (or years!). We let excuses and the busyness of life keep us from starting. We wait for the perfect time to start. We take the first "no" we hear as a sign we should do something else. Not Stacey. One of the most inspiring part of Stacey's TEDx journey is that she actually got rejected multiple times before securing her speaking spot. But she didn't give up. She was persistent, diligent, and kept taking bold action. After spending time with her last week, I'm certain that the most important skill we can cultivate is this: Start shrinking the gap between you saying you want to do something and you actually doing it! Stephen King says: “The scariest moment is always just before you start. After that, things can only get better.” Let's make today the moment that you start taking action on your biggest dreams. The relationship between coach and coachee is special because it creates a safe space that unlocks truth, awareness, and individual power. Over the last year it has truly been an honor being the coach to over 30 individuals. Each relationship is so unique, and each one taught me something new every time we met. Here are some of my take aways from my first year of being a professional coach. ✅ There is so much to see, hear, and feel when you slow down to appreciate and explore what is truly there. ✅ Intuition is a powerful presence and you should find ways to better understand what it is telling you. ✅ Being able to articulate your values allows you to firmly plant your feet on the ground and then pivot in the direction you want to take. ✅ Take the time to notice what your body is telling you because those feelings can be a warning, or they can be encouragement. ✅ There is nothing more sacred than honoring a commitment to yourself, especially knowing those are the commitments we typically break the most. Today I got to train another exceptional cohort of talented leaders in the power of coaching fundamentals. After training, a leader shared this familiar feeling - 'I just realized how much time I've wasted not coaching'. I get it! My approach to developing others completely changed after training for my ICF coaching accreditation. I wish I'd had the skills from the beginning of my leadership journey to maximize potential of all my teams from the start! So often I hear coaching confused with mentoring and feedback, all three are needed, but I cannot stress how game-changing coaching skills can be to #trust, #connection, #capability development, #engagement, #performance and your overall #leadership impact! BLURRED 🤑 LINES Navigating Complexities of Human Connection & How We Value Complex interplay between emotional and financial aspects of relationships, both personal and professional, involve bids for emotional connection, a concept popularized by The Gottman Institute. Bids are essentially discrete requests for attention, affirmation, or connection, and how they're received and responded to can significantly impact relationship dynamics. These bids are crucial for maintaining emotional intimacy and closeness. Emotional accounting refers to the subconscious tracking of bids as give-and-take in relationships. It's like an emotional ledger where people keep track of favors, gestures, and support given and received. When this emotional accounting becomes too transactional, it can strain relationships and diminish genuine connection. Platforms like LinkedIn, while valuable for professional networking, can inadvertently advance a transactional approach to relationships. This is where our balancing act comes in. While capitalism and financial successes are crucial, they mustn’t overshadow this most human aspect of relationships. Capitalism is trying though! Too human needs, especially those that are deeply emotional, existential, or spiritual, often seem so priceless, as if they cannot be met better through monetary transactions. But wait, there’s more: 1. LOVE & CONNECTION: While genuine emotional connections are essential and priceless, apps, therapy or coaching can effectively grease the skids toward more and deeper connection. 2. PURPOSE & MEANING: While the quest for meaning is intrinsic and deeply personal, logotherapy workshops or retreats can offer insights and perspectives that aid in finding purpose, facilitating the journey toward a more meaningful life. 3. IDENTITY & BELONGING: While self-understanding is invaluable, community programs or group activities can foster a sense of belonging, smoothing the path toward a stronger sense of identity within a community. 4. AUTONOMY & FREEDOM: While true freedom is innate, legal or advocacy services can help protect and promote individual freedoms, easing the process of exercising autonomy. 5. SELF-EXPRESSION & CREATIVITY: While creativity is a personal expression, classes or workshops can nurture and develop creative skills, amplifying expression through mediums. 6. PERSONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT: While growth is a personal journey, life coaching or educational courses can provide guidance and support. 7. PEACE OF MIND & INNER HARMONY: While inner peace is priceless, meditation classes or therapy can offer tools for achieving peace of mind, smoothing the path toward a more harmonious inner state. 8. SPIRITUALITY & TRANSCENDENCE: While spirituality is deeply personal, gurus or m religious practices can offer pathways to transcendence and connection to something greater, facilitating spiritual experiences and growth.
