Over the past decade, I have reviewed over 1,000 cv's in search for the best team members to join our team. I see a lot of people in Israel in need of jobs these days so sharing some tips from my experience as a manager and Organizational Psychologist that I hope can be helpful. If you have any questions or additional insights, please feel free to comment below or pm me. I divided the job-seeking journey into 4 stages: 1. Self-reflection 2. CV building 3. Networking 4. “Dating” your future boss In this post I will cover some pointers for the first 3 stages. Next post will cover pointers for the last stage. *Self-reflection* 1. Self-reflection and understanding what you are good at and what you are passionate about. 2. Who are you - Need to be able to answer this in 2-3 lines at the top of the CV. Are you a manager and looking to be in a leadership role or more of a hands-on executive? Is your focus marketing/sales/coding/project management? Pro tip: Ask your friends to be honest with you and share the value they see you bring. It will crystalize your own view as well. *CV and LinkedIn profile* 1. CV building - how does your future boss know you are great at what you do? What success and impact did you have that you can articulate with numbers? 2. The design is great. But the most important is the content. Make sure clear description in the header what you do and keep it short, with bullet points and a 1-pager. Make sure no mistakes. If there is even 1 typo, it is a no-go. 3. Passion talks. Years ago I hired a young man with very little experience because he came with great passion and told me how he taught himself code at age 11. See how you can find that story that highlights your greatness. *Networking* 1. Networking and asking friends for an intro or to put in a good word. Identify 10 people you will have coffee with to brainstorm your career. Some will give you great advice. Others will give you a good lead. 2. Don't only think about networking with those who can give you the job today but rather with those who know people that can help you. 3. The best way to build trust is to show your work in action. I once hired someone because he reached out and explained to me in a loom video why one of my client websites stinked and how that can be fixed. He didn't tell me what he does but showed me. I swear, you can’t make this stuff up!! So, for a while, I wanted to share something that I’ve learned, that I am sure very few people are aware of, and that is the perks of studying in Israeli university. I think we can both agree that U.S. campuses are no longer safe for many people. Well, I had learned about all these perks, and I wanted to write a post and share them with you, but the thing is, posts generally need some sort of visual with them, if they’re going to get traction. So, I needed a picture of a student, someone who has experienced these perks. The only issue is, I don’t know one. So I was sitting on this post wondering where I’d find someone to snap a photo with. Then this happened! Five minutes ago, I’m walking in Tel Aviv to my first meeting, and this kind gentleman stops me, and says “Hey, are you Hillel Fuld? “ I responded, “I am indeed, who are you?” He says, “I’m just a fan.” I responded, “No, you’re not, what’s your name?” He tells me his name is Gavin. “Cool, and what do you do?” He then tells me that he is studying in Israel as part of a partnership with Columbia university!!! Jackpot! Unbelievable. I told him that I was looking for a picture with a student, and it is mind-boggling to me that he just stopped me. Here is the picture of me and Gavin. And now to the topic itself. Ok, so Israel is awesome. I don’t think I need to convince you of that. But, Israel is not just a land of ancient history and gorgeous scenery. It is not even only the land of tech. It’s also a hub for innovative education. Who knew? I’ll admit, I didn’t. With 61 higher education institutions, including 10 universities and 51 colleges, this country offers a diverse range of programs that cater to every academic interest. And here’s the best part: If you’re an Oleh Chadash (a new immigrant), you might be eligible for FREE tuition! Yes. Free. The Israeli government, through the Student Authority under the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, provides a benefits package that could cover your tuition fees. Fiverr and #Israel A lot of people have suggested that I expand my business of Marketing Brand Broadcasting® to Fiverr, but I want to share my thoughts on why I have chosen not to do so. Has anyone noticed that Fiverr's headquarters are in Israel? By using Fiverr, are we essentially funding and supporting a company that contributes to the oppression of Palestinians? It's concerning that despite Pakistan's stance against Israel and the explicit refusal to recognize Israeli passports, Pakistanis are still engaging in work on Israeli platforms. Shouldn't we hold ourselves accountable for this instead of solely blaming the government? We often express support for leaders like Nawaz Sharif, Zardari Imran Khan, but would he ever endorse working on Israeli platforms or using Israeli products? Highly unlikely. Therefore, those already earning on Fiverr should consider transitioning to alternative platforms over time. And for those considering starting as freelancers, it's urged not to create accounts on Fiverr. Given Israel's actions in Palestine and the potential targeting of other Muslim countries in the future, it's crucial to think about the implications of supporting such platforms financially. Two years ago, we acquired an Israeli start-up (Adverifai) that was working to identify misinformation on the Internet. We invested heavily in the product and revealed it to the Cannes Lions crowd. I’m super proud of the team's work and all that investment. This year I heard from many customers asking me why Zefr didn’t also work on the open web. NO company can do everything well. Sure, you can do everything….but just not well. I understand that sometimes our customers don’t understand the difference between a robust solution and a check-the-box solution. But that fact doesn’t change Zefr’s commitment to the quality of our solution. When I look at our industry competitors (i.e. the legacy measurement providers), they clearly believe they are in the (static) software business. At Zefr, we understand that our business in safety and security is always evolving because the space is replete with adversarial agents attempting to monetize on harmful content. It becomes an aggressive cat-and-mouse game. The key to combating these agents of misinformation and brand safety is to aggressively INVEST. It never STOPS! That is why we maniacally focus on the walled gardens! It’s the space that gets most of our customer’s investment, AND it requires an ALWAYS innovation mentality to stay in front of the adversarial agents. If you are a public or private company and you settle for the “good enough” software mentality in the safety and security space, one day you will wake up and it won’t be good enough. The statement on Zefr’s Cannes signage could be applied to legacy ad tech companies. Building brand (or Ad Tech) trust is hard, losing it easy. #peanutbuttermanifesto

What you are seeing is a mistake. It must be. Adobe is a great company, but even the great ones make mistakes. I was trying out Adobe Podcast to enhance the audio quality of my podcast. - The Engagement Lab, with Yahav Levy as my co-host (it is in Hebrew). The freemium allows up to 30-minute-long audio files; my episode was 40 minutes long. So what do I do? Upgrade. This is an excellent example of how setting your freemium/premium threshold can encourage upgrades. Anyhow, I click the upgrade and get the attached "give me your money" paywall. That's fine. That's what I expected... in a way. I was expecting access to Adobe Podcast, not Adobe Express. You know what, that's fine. Maybe Adobe Express is the better deal for me. But, What is it? In what way is it better for me? I'm a podcaster, not a designer... So, excuse me if I don't know what Adobe Express is! And even with all that empty space on the paywall, Adobe didn't find it necessary to mention it. And that's the mistake. Now what? Should I go off-tab to search for an explanation of what Adobe Express is? See if it's worth my buck. Or should I search for an alternative? Adobe Podcasters are not your usual customers. They may not know what Adobe Express is. A Podcaster subscription is a better fit for them, but if that's not doable... Could you tell them what they'll get for the Express subscription? Now, you don't need me to tell you that. I just wanted to bring your attention to this. But also use this opportunity as a lesson for those just starting their startup. A paywall is not a technical thing. It should be the beginning of a relationship. It's almost like a first date. Could you make it feel special?

This post is dedicated to my non-Israeli friends. But everyone’s welcome to read it :)   I’m sitting down to write this post about 10 minutes before the Israeli Memorial Day transitions to our Independence Day. Every year this is a nearly unbearable transition, from deep sadness to pride and joy. We are taught, from a very young age (as early as 6 years old, as I learned this year through my son), that these two dates were set intentionally, so that us Israelis will always remember that our independence came, and keeps coming, at great cost. This year, I feel it’s even worse than unbearable. It’s simply impossible. I find myself uncapable of celebrating Independence Day. As a nation and a country, we’re still at war. As an individual (and far from being the only one feeling like this), I’m still mourning. I truly believe we should still find ways to be happy and participate in or even initiate whatever activities that serve that purpose. But highlighting the achievement of becoming an independent country, of forming a safe country for Jewish people.. Right now it just doesn’t feel like the right time to do that.     And here’s why I’m writing to you, non-Israelis. I want to tell you more about what I’m mourning. I hope this will help those of you who see Israel at a mostly negative light, better understand the complexity of our reality.   Personally, I fully acknowledge Israel shares the responsibility over the truly shitty life of the people of Gaza. Along with that, I’m mourning what Israelis must live through right now: The tragic loss of so many loved ones, so many of them in terrible ways that I don’t think I’ll ever dare expose myself to. The need to leave their homes, and uproot their families, their whole lives. The fear that we’ll never feel safe again, not in Israel, and not anywhere else. The feeling I often struggle with, that I might never fully recover from my personal Oct 7 experience. That I will never be my best self again because of it – not the best mother I want to be, not the best partner, not the best friend, not the best employee.   So back to the complexity – you see, almost all Israelis are like me. People who just want to feel safe, just want to provide their kids with everything they need, just want to be able to celebrate without thinking about all that is wrong in the world.   I’m proud to be Israeli, although I’ve never felt more challenged to say it out loud.

Some of them include: - For God's sake turn off the overhead lights - Use window light when you don't have lights to use - Use things like shower curtains to make the light softer to get rid of harsh shadows (it helps smooth out wrinkles and fine lines too) - Use white poster board to reflect light, and black poster board to absorb light These are just a few.... Yesterday I had the pleasure of pitching a major Israeli client. It was the last pitch of the day before they will be making their decision. The 4 others were Israel’s biggest brand agencies. Despite the fact that I have almost zero experience with the Israeli market, I don’t offer design services and I barely had time to prepare for the pitch, I left the strongest impression on the CEO, or rather, I introduced a new variable to the equation, making their decision process a bit more interesting. In many ways it was like comparing 4 apples to one mandarine. I can’t compete at their game because I don’t play that game. In not so many words, it was quite clear that each agency’s pitch was indistinguishable from one another. Each agency has done exceptional work for even bigger brands, and that makes their pitch a dog and pony show, ie. “This is what we’ve done for others, so you can trust us that we’ll do something good for you”. But in effect, each agency is showcasing design and fireworks. And because big agency work is first and foremost trendy (aligned with global design trends), it all looks the same. It ultimately becomes a question of taste. But this client wanted something different, and he was told I think different. So I kept it simple. I focused on one key argument that resonated. Apples use strategy to sell design. A mandarine uses strategy to let you imagine the role your brand will play in both the public’s eye, and the eyes of your different stakeholders. I promised not to include 3 visual directions to express the strategy. I even went so far to say they wouldn’t even get one visual direction. But I did make one promise that I definitely intend to deliver on. After I present the strategy, you won’t need to see how it looks, but nonetheless you will be able to close your eyes and see it clearly. And then I suggested we look at how my version of strategy can achieve this. I presented a recent strategy for a client in a different industry, but with certain relevant touchpoints. A strategy with no visual elements, but one that made it very clear how the business differs from the competition, transcends its category, and most importantly, captures a uniquely desirable position for its customers. I could see everyone in the room got it. That doesn’t mean I got it, and it doesn’t mean I’m smarter or more talented than any of the other fine people working at these fine agencies , but it definitely says something about the power of position, and more importantly, it says something about the pitfalls of a status quo, where often agencies have no incentive to fix something that isn't broke. My role however is not to think design, but rather focus on what comes before, on what a client can be, and to make sure I provide the best case scenario of how they can get there. #brandstrategy #position #narrative #bigidea

40,000. Let that sink in. Time is the enemy of everything, if you can weather the storm, time, you will find yourself and your company achieving awesome things. We are surviving, and I am excited now that the platform is built to bring in additional members to clean up the css to get it out to the public. I recommend honestly the bootstrap approach until things stabilize or serious funding or revenue are coming in. hire the talent you need to address the problem. half of companies kill themselves out of ego in hiring those who contribute to long term solutions that may exacerbate the short term. food for thought. it's only on supporting each other, rowing together, we weather the storm. #israel #israeliinnovation

If you're an Israeli startup, you most probably don't need that expensive PR firm in the US/UK to get the media results you're looking for.... Here's why: 🌍 close physical proximity to journalists doesn't provide a significant advantage anymore, PR is all about crafting great/timely/relevant stories, targeting the right journalists and ultimately, the hustle. The days of wining and dining journalists are long gone (except at industry events, who doesn't love free food at events?!). 💰 the large retainer that US firms want you to pay isn't that large for them. US firms charge astronomical prices. For startups, they charge less but almost always put junior people on your account to make up for it, regardless of what they promise. 🚀 back to the hustle - Israelis have it. Even "anglo" Israelis. We spend less time making powerpoints to prove that we are working, and more time actually hustling to get the best results we can for our clients. Sometimes going abroad can make sense, especially when it's a hyper-focused agency in a very niche industry, or when a company has gotten so large that they truly need 5+ people on their account...but these are very rare exceptions. I'll admit it, we've lost business to PR agencies based in the US. It irks me every time because I know that odds are, they will be paying a small fortune and not receiving the results that make the investment worthwhile. Almost always, I monitor the coverage and check in with the company a few months down the line to have them tell me that they aren't getting the ROI they expected. My advice: before jumping across the proverbial pond, see if your communications goals can be met by a local team (White City Media *woot! *woot!) that can bring you good results consistently and provide solid ROI, while also being able to strategize face-to-face over coffee in Tel Aviv, or any other city in our innovative country. 🇮🇱 #PR #startups -

Many companies often believe that thought leadership should come primarily, from their chief executives and senior staff. But this is wrong. Great thought leadership should infuse every piece of content you produce. The way a company communicates with its audience is obviously crucial. But It’s not just about sharing expertise; it’s also about sharing the why behind what you do. When your messaging aligns with your company’s values and culture, you create a much deeper connection with your audience. This past year has been one of, if not the, most challenging for Israel. During such times, effective leadership is critical. However, when it comes to communicating the culture and values of this tiny country, it's 'thought leadership' can be found across the spectrum. A great example can be seen from a song that's been massively popular in Israel during the war. Eyal Golan's song is bursting with hope, faith, and resilience. It beautifully articulates why Israel must fight this war even though it doesn't want to. It also captures the vision and mission of peace that the country is so desperately yearning for.
