Summary

As a political and Congressional reporter, I take complicated ideas and communicate them clearly and concisely so that a general audience might understand them and niche audience might learn something new. At Yahoo News, I reach 175 million unique readers a month, the largest news audience on the Internet. I have spent years building relationships with others to gain access to information and to stay plugged into a constantly changing industry. I also am adept at all forms of media — social and traditional —  with a Twitter following of more than 13,000 and a growing radio and TV presence. I'm a frequent guest host on SiriusXM's politics channel and have appeared on msnbc, C-SPAN, PBS Newshour, CNBC, CurrentTV (RIP) and ESPN2, as well as ABC and Fox News's live online video programming. Before moving to Washington, I was a sports editor, college basketball beat writer and weekly columnist covering Duke.

Experience

  • Political Correspondent

    Yahoo News
    – Present (1 year 8 months)Washington D.C. Metro Area

I am a political correspondent for Yahoo News in Washington, responsible for covering the 2016 elections, outside groups and Congressional politics. In 2014, I wrote on multiple Senate races, including Kentucky's closely-watched re-election bid of the current Republican leader, the House leadership shake-up, the challenges for outside groups to find success and even the complications President Barack Obama faces when trying to engage in policy on one of his favorite topics, sports. I helped anchor our Election Night live blog, as well as our live production for the State of the Union.

For Yahoo Sports, I helped run the live blog for the first two rounds of the 2015 NCAA men's basketball tournament, as well as contributed to Major League Baseball coverage.

  • Staff Writer

Roll Call / The Economist Group
    (2 years 10 months)Washington D.C. Metro Area

I was a Congressional correspondent for Roll Call, the oldest daily newspaper on Capitol Hill. I covered multiple spending fights, shutdown threats (and one shutdown!) and other various legislative initiatives in my two-and-half-year tenure. From breaking news to long profiles, I led our team's coverage on the news of the day and stories off-the-beaten-path. I also was Roll Call's designated reporter for its annual Congressional baseball game at Nationals' Park—a fun yet ridiculous display of unathletic politicians trying to live out childhood dreams. I filed dispatches from both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in 2012, in addition to handling other political coverage over that election, including but not limited to the hotly contested Wisconsin and Missouri Senate races.

  • Staff Writer

    POLITICO
    (1 year 9 months)Washington D.C. Metro Area

I covered Congress and national politics for Politico, reporting on the sweeping health care and Wall Street reform bills of the 111th Congress and traveling to write on breaking news events across the country — from the shooting of a representative in Arizona to the massive labor protests in Wisconsin to Chicago's 2010 mayoral election.

  • Sports Editor

    Duke Chronicle
    (1 year)

I ran sports coverage for Duke's daily newspaper, The Chronicle, after spending years as a columnist, basketball and men's golf writer. Managing a staff of dozens of writers, editors and photographers, I was responsible for assigning and editing content to compete with national news outlets (on everything from the nationally-ranked men's basketball team to the aftermath of the Duke lacrosse scandal). I also designed pages daily. As a team, the sports section produced weekly 8-page sports supplements, which ran every Monday, and five special supplements throughout the academic year. Was named as one of the nation's top college journalists by U-Wire in 2009.
