As organizations increasingly benefit from AI technologies to enhance efficiency and solve pressing challenges, understanding the implications of these tools is crucial. Looking forward to the screening of “Trainwreck!” tonight in Hamilton, Ontario. As the film’s trailer makes clear, despite all the benefits of transit-oriented development, it triggers the displacement and exclusion of vulnerable populations, increasing the cost of housing, and reducing the supply of affordable units where we need them most. According to the filmmakers, the impacts in Hamilton to date include: 90+ buildings already acquired by Metrolinx 168 tenant households displaced Tenants and small business owners feeling pressure to leave For the past 18 months, Hamilton-based and national stakeholders have been working together with SI Canada on this problem, and have designed a compelling approach to ensure equitable transit oriented development can become commonplace - first for Hamilton itself and then for cities everywhere. The Hamilton Transit Oriented Affordable Housing Lab  has been funded by the CMHC National Housing Strategy’s Solutions Labs program. These labs fuel collaborative innovation by bringing together diverse groups of people to solve complex housing problems, including in-depth research, prototyping and testing of potential solutions. A critical gap in mental health and substance use treatment is the lack of a digital pathway that links people across supportive agencies. To bridge this gap, the MH+A Alliance, with funding from Ontario Health, has engaged Calian Health to connect and integrate various EMR (electronic medical record) systems. 📣 Why Policy Matters in Elections 📣 As election season approaches, it's easy to get caught up in personalities and headlines. But what truly matters to me is policy. Policies shape our communities, economies, and the future we want to build. From housing and healthcare to mental health support and climate action, the decisions made by our elected leaders directly impact our daily lives. Voting isn't just about picking a candidate—it's about choosing the ideas and solutions that align with the vision you have for a better future. This week BC Green Party leader Sonia Furstenau said her party's proposal for a network of community health care centres is part and parcel of the party's larger plan to address healthcare "holistically" by focusing on both primary care and the social determinants of health. They are the only party currently talking about prevention and they wish to “Make disease prevention the central pillar of BC healthcare.” They are highlighting what many of know to be true, the lack of access to primary care has meant more people do not get care for their ailments at early stages. Not only does this cost more money, it results in poorer outcomes. The BC Greens' plan for Mental health care is also leading the way: ➡️ Regulate counsellors and therapists to provide accountability and oversight for the profession in anticipation of including them in the universal mental healthcare system at a later stage. ➡️ Create a publicly-funded, universal mental healthcare system, starting with a one-year pilot project providing six sessions with a psychologist to anyone who needs it. In today’s world, the need for quality mental health care has never been more evident. Yet, for many, access remains the biggest barrier. I hope all parties can agree this election that we must prioritize making mental health care accessible to everyone.

My whole life when I identified barriers, the first response is often denial as those who create barriers are often resistant to accept they could be responsible. Eventually when I lay it out in a way that can not be ignored they state that I make good points and though they have no capacity to fix now - they will fix later. Then come the visions plans and strategies, and when I point out that I encounter a barrier today I am told great point our vision will fix it later - while the data on areas like hiring people with disabilities remain flat lined through multiple visions strategies and plans. That is because change occurs in the moment not in the future. Each instance that is ignored is one more piece in a long chain that your vision is not important enough to create action. I have reached out to champions - one actually listened in 2019 and enabled me to be part of an Unconscious Bias working group! Most do not respond while the remainder talk about their visions but do not even acknowledge the barrier faced now. Accessibility will only be achieved when organizations use the 'A' Grade approach. Each time a person identifies a barrier: 'A'ccept that even without intent, barriers can be created. 'A'ctively listen from the perspective of the person who has encountered a barrier to understand from their perspective. 'A'ct now - promising a change later just perpetuates the problem.

Thanks Marina Dawson for tagging me. Corporate Partnership can be a tricky landscape for nonprofits, and this article really highlights quite a few of the reasons why. It is always my recommendation that charities are clear internally - and in the best case prepared to do so externally - around who they will partner with and why. We call it their guiding principles of corporate partnership. In my opinion, not all partnerships make sense and I want nonprofits to be thoughtful about it. Having these clear principles does not stop individuals from expressing their concerns with a partnership that they don't believe aligns or is appropriate, but it does provide context on the charity side. It should demonstrate, at minimum, that the nonprofit has entered into the partnership thoughtfully and with intent. An article like this is a good moment to pause and consider - could this happen to us? And if it did, what would we do? Hopefully, have a gracious and clear response.

In 2020, amid the pandemic, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) recruited NetGain to help establish a new center for social accountability, leveraging our ability to capture diverse perspectives and secure funding for the unique healthcare needs of remote northern communities.  This contributed to the School’s credibility which ultimately led to NOSM becoming Canada's first stand-alone medical university. Amidst the pandemic's peak, what could be more engaging than a virtual assignment with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) in Sudbury and Thunder Bay? Operating under Laurentian University and guided by a new Dean, fresh viewpoints paved the way for setting up a new center for social accountability.  NetGain was referred to NOSM following a succession of projects for Centennial College that involved the capturing of diverse perspectives into unified rationales for support. While not the expert in medical issues, NetGain’s spirit to learn-it-all appealed to NOSM because it meant that we could listen, sift, weigh, and articulate complex issues on behalf of various groups without the burden of preconceived opinions. Even without in-depth expertise in healthcare in the North, it was clear that Southern healthcare approaches could not address the needs of remote populations. Compared to their Southern counterparts, residents of northern communities experience significantly higher rates of premature and preventable deaths and, on average, die seven years earlier. Many individuals in remote areas lack access to preventive and diagnostic services that are commonly available in Southern Ontario. For example, early cancer detection is less likely for northerners, and emergency response times are much longer compared to the South. The focus on increased social accountability in NOSM arose from the gap between the provincial healthcare delivery system in northern Ontario and the unique needs of the communities.  With most of the policy and planning coming from the Ministry at Queen’s Park, a northern perspective was needed. NetGain was tasked with capturing the views of faculty and administrators into a unified theme that could be expressed as an operating plan, strategic plan, and a promise of service delivery that could be backed by donors and funders. The value of this guidance to the School was recognized by the Ministries of Health and Education, under whose guidance NOSM operated. Later that year, when Laurentian University declared insolvency and during the subsequent year of resolving the aftermath, NOSM remained intact and was elevated to independent degree-granting status. Where formerly it had been under the governance of the University’s board of regents, the Government of Ontario passed legislation making it the first stand-alone medical university in Canada.
