Residential energy usage in the United States contributes to roughly 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. Considering recent global events, meeting the increased energy demands is going to be challenging. As the climate continues to heat up escalating higher levels of uncertainty, homeowners around the world are faced with a myriad of potential challenges to their homes that are tied to changing weather patterns such as increased moisture, stronger storms, wind gusts, larger hail, and greater air temperature extremes (i.e. from polar vortexes to 100+ degree heat indexes). Many residential properties, especially older homes, are not prepared for the ecological challenges of the future. For instance, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, roughly 90% of existing homes are under-insulated, causing energy waste while decreasing comfort for the homeowners.

How Forward-Thinking Businesses Can Address Systemic Inequalities Through Adoption of the SDGs 2 Strategies to Build a More Equitable Economy

According to the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner, “Extreme inequalities are the defining issue of our time. … Rising inequalities are undercutting development progress, frustrating poverty eradication, and producing social, political and economic instability.” We as leaders in the Certified B Corporation movement of “people that are using business as a force for good” have a real opportunity to adopt the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address extreme inequalities.
For those not familiar with the 17 SDGs, they are unique in that they are interconnected and interdependent — meaning that in order for countries, governments, NGOs, and businesses to address global human rights and the extreme inequalities that exist, we also have to address the social, environmental, and economic imbalances. Underpinning the SDGs are 169 targets that were created as a blueprint to help stakeholders implement equitable systems that benefit all humankind. Historically, systems of inequality have manifested in several forms, acting as “disproportionate threats to the enjoyment of several human rights … including the right to equality and non-discrimination, the right to life, the right to health, right to an adequate standard of living, and cultural rights” according to United Nations experts in the 2021 Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council.

We live in a globally interconnected world, where food from India or China can be purchased at our local grocery store, and the average apple travel 1,400 miles from the orchard to your dinner plate. In 2012 Wisconsin agricultural goods and commodities were exported to 149 countries around the globe, while 10% of the state’s overall employment was engaged in the agricultural economy. Within the state we have also seen a shift in consumer preference towards the inclusion of greater amounts of locally sourced and artisan made produce and products within homes, schools, institutions and hospitals. As of the 2011-2012 academic year, 1,131 individual Wisconsin schools were engaged in Farm to School activities. Examples of school level participation include; sourcing locally grown produce (vegetables, fruits and herbs) and milk for school lunches/meals, growing edible school gardens and implementing waste resource management programs (i.e. building, garden composting programs). The Wisconsin Bureau of Correctional Enterprises also manage five correctional farms and a dairy, which supply milk, ice cream and sherbet to all of Wisconsin’s correctional institutions. Building on the strong Wisconsin traditional of family farming, sustainable agriculture and artisan entrepreneurialism, Wisconsin governmental entities (k-12 schools, technical colleges, University system, correctional facilities, etc..) are perfectly positioned to take greater advantage of the diverse quantities of Wisconsin grown and made products within their operations, through the adoption of a Wisconsin Farm to Government program.

It is a bilingual (Spanish/English) Advanced Placement Environmental Science course that is rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The centerpiece of the Global Sustainability course is the unique partnerships that the students have with local businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout the course, as they learn about and take action on the UNSDGs within sustainable business practices. This course also prepares students to potentially earn college credit through Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate testing. Lisa Geason-Bauer, the President of Evolution Marketing, has worked side-by-side with the teachers managing the course to seek out mentors, guest speakers, job shadow opportunities, and project partners with whom to connect our students.

Women in Green is a worldwide leadership platform creating space for women who are shifting the narrative on empowerment, access and impact in the clean energy economy. As old paradigms are challenged a new roadmap emerges that is shaking up how we measure progress, who defines those indicators and what and whom is missing from the leadership table as we unfailingly work to raise the quality of life for all.
Women in Green reminds us that each of us is a person of great influence. In fact, we are all “sheroes” - SHERO: A female hero; a woman that displays strong heroic traits under tremendous pressure and is triumphant over her circumstances.
Stand up for what we believe in, stand up for others, stand up for speaking our minds, and stand up for paving the way for future generations of strong women.
International Women’s Day says, “let’s all be #eachforequal.” Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations, and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world. Definitely the work of everyday sheroes!
Join us to start to conversation at the WI Women in Green Meet-up. At the meet-up you'll hear from and engage in facilitated small group discussion with women from across the sustainability industry.
Speakers:
•Sharon Adams, Owner at HN Development
• Elizabeth Churchill, Business Workplace Shared Services Sustainability Administrator at American Family Insurance

USGBC Sheroes for Mentorship (Lisa Geason-Bauer)
United States Green Building Council
At USGBC, we believe in women supporting women, and one way that can be accomplished is through mentorship. Experience itself may be the best teacher, but having a trusted advisor who has been there is pretty helpful. Many of us have been lucky enough to have a person in our life who took us under their wing, shared what they knew and were there for us when we felt uncertain. Perhaps this person intentionally led by example, or perhaps they didn’t even realize they were mentoring…

Lisa Geason-Bauer, Evolution Marketing, LLC
As strong a leader as Geason-Bauer is in sustainability, she may be strongest in her roles as mentor and sponsor. In the words of one of those such women, “[Lisa] is one of the most dedicated women mentors I've ever met. She regularly mentors women through her own woman-owned business, and in all aspects of her life. It comes naturally to her, and she's extremely dedicated to it.”
Recognizing that women-owned businesses only account for 10% of businesses in Wisconsin, Geason-Bauer is an active sponsor of women entrepreneurs working to start their own companies. Additionally, she spends time mentoring young professionals, college students and high school students. She is a founding advisory board member of Social Impact 360, the first and largest mentorship-based training organization for young social entrepreneurs on college campuses nationwide.
She advises, “Remember to have grace, compassion, and empathy for yourself and others when challenging situations arise, and don’t ever stop talking and envisioning what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes!” -

Evolution Marketing is Wisconsin’s first triple bottom line managed environmental marketing, communications, design and sustainability consulting firm. Members of the Evolution Marketing team have provided professional services and consulting assistance to the Oconomowoc Utilities Lead by Example Energy Conservation Team since 2008 and created the educational video, which showcased green building and energy conservation features incorporated into the City of Oconomowoc’s new Fire Station #2. Lisa, President at Evolution Marketing, LLC, supports the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance in planning and facilitating events. She has taken the opportunity whenever it has presented itself over the last seven years to promote the WGBA to Wisconsin businesses, not-for-profit organizations, local media, and to regional thought leaders to make sure the chapter’s reach and impact is maximized. Evolution Marketing is Wisconsin’s first triple bottom-line managed advertising/communications firm that offers environmental marketing, communication, design and sustainability consulting services. The firm has been providing services to the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance since 2009.
Having grown up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, Lisa is an incredible advocate for sustainably raised local food and Wisconsin artisan cheese. For her, the best part of volunteering with the WGBA is that she is able to work on projects that have a positive direct impact on local farms engaged in sustainable agricultural practices and Wisconsin farm families and educate WGBA members and sponsors about the farm to table movement. As a volunteer with the WGBA, she has been able to leverage her relationships in food and agriculture with local producers, farmers and artisan food makers in order to help educate green building stakeholders and leaders about the role they can play in creating a sustainable regional food system.

She embraces the possibilities of change and integrates principles of sustainability into day-to-day business operations.
More about the award:
The role of an individual in providing leadership was demonstrated by Senator Gaylord Nelson. In the spirit of Senator Nelson, the Sustainable Leadership Award is designed to recognize individuals that see beyond short term, market-driven actions and position their business, or their sector, for success over the long term. Sustainability reflects both a mindset and a values set, and we look to recognize leaders that embrace a triple bottom line approach. These individuals often have the mentality that “if not now, when, and if not us, who?”
This award honors individuals who see a better way for business to serve all of their stakeholders, from shareholders and employees to customers and community members. These individuals show an outstanding commitment to sustainable business practices and are models for others.
The exemplary sustainability leader:
• Serves as a cheerleader within the institution on sustainability issues
• Aligns sustainability with corporate culture
• Incorporates sustainability into business processes and operations
• Generates buy-in from other senior managers and the board
• Creates opportunities for employee innovation and leadership
• Engages stakeholders on sustainability through multiple channels of communication
• Puts in place systems to ensure measure and track performance and accomplishments
• Recognizes and celebrates successes
• Makes sustainability personal
