Networking is about consistency. You can't be good at it and will never get good at it if you only do it when you need something from others. When I first started in the recruiting industry, my goal was to find the "center of the C++ developer universe" or "the best project manager who did Y2K remediation work" or "the most seasoned MCSE". I would call everyone within those circles. I would attend events where I knew those people would be. I would sponsor lunch and learns and invite those people to attend. Then, I would talk to them. See which ones were willing to share their story with me, which ones were excited to educate me on what they did and how they determined this was the right career path for them. I wouldn't ask them for anything in those first few meetings other than the opportunity to reach out if I had questions I didn't have answers to. The ones who were willing to take my call calls became my people - they still are today and they know who they are! Software engineers, it’s time to reality-check your salary dreams. I’m tired of hearing inflated salary expectations from developers who do not know what the market pays. Do you think you deserve 3x more? I’ve got financial data that says otherwise. Advice: a) Listen to your recruiter. We’ve done our homework. b) Be humble. Market value is what companies are willing to pay, not what you think you deserve. c) Adjust your expectations or watch your opportunities disappear. Trust me, we want to get you the best deal. But when your numbers exceed the CEO’s, it’s time for a severe reality check. Keep arguing with the people who hold the data and see how far that gets you in this competitive market. PS: The more you earn, the more we make, so believe me, it is in our best interest for you to have more than Elon Musk. But reality is what we can't bypass. PPS: Always stick to market value. If it's too low for you, we can add 20% on top to sound reasonable. A study by Pendo found that 80% of software features are rarely or never used. 🤯 You probably need to change what they are working on. Please tell me you aren't "Keeping them busy." SWE Industry: Never manipulate strings in Prod if it can be avoided, and if seen in a PR by a staff/principal engineer would immediately be rejected Job Market: Manipulate these strings in weird ways on this assessment so you can get this job... Wild, if you are interviewing software engineers, give them real world problems to solve, not some arbitrary random string manipulation that we would never do in production. You're likely missing out on a lot of talented people.
