  • Bring Your Own Learning: Transform Instruction with Any Device

International Society for Technology in Education

Today's students have embraced mobile technology, and educators can no longer ignore this reality.
In Bring Your Own Learning, highly respected educational technologist Lenny Schad tells the story of leading his large Texas school district through a program of inclusion, where it no longer matters what technology is being used or who owns the device. What matters is that students learn in the ways that make sense to them and their teachers.

Projects

  • Data Interoperability

    - Present

To continue PowerUP, led program to deploy digital content access, individual device support, bring-your-own-device, and one-to-one deployments in two districts. Managed conversion of 2.5M pieces of content into Learning Management System (LMS) and digital repository for students and teachers, housing all content, lesson plans, training videos, and exemplar lessons.

  • Directed Digital Transformation Initiatives

    - Present

Led program to deploy digital content access, individual device support, bring-your-own-device, and one-to-one deployments across two districts. Guided leadership teams to define objectives, manage change, and build acceptance. Achieved first-ever success of an initiative at this scope and scale. Initiative became best-practice model for other districts.

  • Data Security and Privacy

    - Present

Managed large-scale projects to improve security and privacy throughout the school district: (1) implemented tiered data management solution with role-based access portal at KISD; (2) established security standards and functional procedures for HISD records management division to protect student and employee data; (3) co-architected high-security application toolbox with software vendor to manage data privacy, which was so successful it became standard component of vendor suite.

  • Led Technology Restoration Post-Harvey

    -

Newly created disaster readiness procedures enabled rapid diagnosis and triage of hurricane damage, then allowed district to partner with Greater Houston Partnership to mobilize 300 volunteers to remediate systems for 45+ campuses. In four days, all campuses were back online (compared to estimate of three weeks).

  • Implemented Enterprise SAP System

    -

Orchestrated multiple enterprise implementations at two school districts. In addition to LMS mentioned above, implemented Student Information System (SIS) to manage scheduling, grading, attendance, discipline, special populations, and state reporting on one platform. At HISD, integrated BI, finance, HR, payroll, purchasing, budgeting, and maintenance functions in SAP-based ERP, resulting in reduced staffing needs, enhanced efficiency, consolidated data, and streamlined workflows.

  • Managed District Acquisition

    -

Collaborated on rapid analysis of acquired organization’s systems, data, and staff as part of due diligence efforts. Developed plans for decommissioning and data migration, and oversaw staffing reorganization and transition.
