🌟 Managing Anxiety for Entrepreneurial Success 🌟 Merage School alumna Professor Lily Yuxuan Zhu of Washington State University led the research with co-authors Professor Maia Young and Professor Chris Bauman of the Merage School to explore how linking anxiety to passion can significantly enhance an entrepreneur's pitch performance and to offer novel approaches to managing anxiety in emotionally charged scenarios. 🙌 💼 From Theory to Venture Competitions The team investigated how entrepreneurs naturally manage anxiety, which was revealed to be through a spectrum of strategies, with distraction being the most common. Few participants had actively acknowledged and reframed their anxiety. Zhu, Young, and Bauman utilized subsequent studies to test their hypothesis in real-world scenarios, focusing on participants in venture competitions. The researchers surveyed participants moments before their pitches to capture their emotional states and strategies for managing anxiety as well as the judges’ perceptions of their pitch. The research unveiled a pattern: individuals who linked their anxiety to their passion for their projects had consistently outperformed their peers. The judges had rated these participants as more passionate and more convincing, resulting in higher funding awards. Bauman emphasizes that, “People can improve their performance without necessarily eliminating the anxiety... It’s about adding passion.” 🤩 🤝 Bridging Research and Reality This study stands out for its focus on real-world stakes rather than controlled lab conditions. Young notes that, “This wasn’t just about generalizing a strategy. Arizona State University, which has been ranked America’s most innovative university for 10 straight years, is currently No. 3 in the U.S. for AI research, according to Computer Science rankings.
