The second part of the report is a case study that features interviews with 11 Indigenous-identifying individuals with board experience. The final interview sample included seven women and four men, three in Canada, one in Australia, and seven in the US. Members of this group identify as Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Indigenous Hispanic, and First Nation people.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about civic science lately and so I was thrilled to see this recent, award-winning article from Andrea Isabel López, MPH and Mónica Feliú-Mójer, Ph.D. about the need to change models of funding (and evaluation) for civic science projects. https://lnkd.in/d6Ht8j_V They note that civic science is based on relationships, and then argue that (1) funding models should include the time needed for relationships to be nurtured and grow, and (2) funders should change expectations for evaluation to focus on relationship building itself as an outcome. Yes please, and let's go!!! At Catalyst, we’ve been encouraging thought partners to set goals related to deep relationship building, and then to collect stories of that work, including the trials and tribulations as part of their evaluation. We’ve also been encouraging folks to work with the story-holders themselves to figure out ways to gather and share stories that don't feel extractive. Here’s the thing. We’ve talked about this a lot, and we haven’t implemented it yet. So here’s an ask and a call to action. I suspect some of you are probably doing this work already. If you are, please share what you have been up to so that we can be inspired by you as we think about how to deepen evaluation practice to support civic science efforts. And if you’re not doing this kind of work yet, join us – jump into this work to help shift evaluation practice. We don't need to wait for funders to require this shift.
