  • In Studio: Recipes for Systemic Change

    Sitra

This book explores a particular Strategic Design method that we at Sitra call the HDL Studio Model. It's a unique way of bringing together the right people, a carefully framed problem, a supportive place, and an open-ended process to craft holistic vision and sketch the pathway towards strategic improvement.

The book includes an introduction to Strategic Design, a "how-to" manual for organizing Studios, and three practical examples of what an HDL Studio looks like in action. Geoff Mulgan, CEO of NESTA, has written the foreword and Mikko Kosonen, President of Sitra, contributed the afterword.

  • Legible Practices: Six Stories About the Craft of Stewardship

    Sitra

This is not the book to convince you that the world is changing and our systems are currently under stress. The purpose here is to begin codifying the practises of stewardship, as exhibited by innovators who are consciously rethinking institutions to better meet the challenges of today.

Stewardship is the art of aligning decisions with impact when many minds are involved in making a plan, and many hands in enacting it. This notion comes to life through the stories of six projects on three continents.

  • From Shelter to Equity: Designing social housing but building wealth

    Sitra

A multi-disciplinary team led by the architects of Elemental design a radical new typology of social housing that is able to grow over time, both in size and in value. We see how they practice strategic design, discovering along the way that:

A realistic look at the status quo can inspire new design solutions that address higher-order challenges

Participatory processes should be carefully designed not to make promises that are too big to keep

Savvy engagement with the media is useful to generate political capital necessary to launch an unconventional design

    Perspecta 46: Error

Most architects are well equipped to work with form, but the other core dynamics of city-making such as finance, policy, and politics are often beyond our reach, if not avoided all together. What matters is not the shape of the city per se, but how the city and its form shape us. Operating in three dimensions, at many different nested scales, and at multiple parallel time-scales, the sustainable city is a mysterious, even wicked problem. As this titanic issue becomes increasingly difficult to ignore, is the discipline of architecture capable of anything other than detailing the deck chairs?
