Cenas Compartidas, Vermont en Español (Community Potlucks, Vermont in Spanish)

    - 10 years 1 month

    Social Services

Since 2004, my wife and I started a Latin Potluck called "Cenas Compartidas" (cenas: dinner; compartidas: shared).

The goal of this events are to:

    1) unify the Hispano-Latin community once a month in an event that is familiar to everyone, where our kids can speak in Spanish, learning about our own cultures.
    2) share a delicious ethnic dish.
    3) raise awareness about common issues.

    The Community Free Box

My wife and I started a re-use-reduce-recycle responsible consumption volunteer program called "The Community Free Box" at UVM Apartments and Family Housing.

My wife and I started a re-use-reduce-recycle responsible consumption volunteer program called "The Community Free Box" at UVM Apartments and Family Housing.

The goal was to promote responsible consumption by generating environmental perception about reducing the amount of waste generated when people move in and out or, simply by reusing the goods residents don’t want to use anymore. Only after that, free box items were donated to different institutions such as, Salvation Army, Planet Aid, Recycle North and other. Very little goes to landfills.

In approximately five years, the free box project has produced some interesting results. More or less 540 bags of clothes, toys, kitchen and other miscellaneous items have been delivered in approximately 120 trips (twice a month). Roughly fifty percent of the delivered items were women clothes and shoes. Considering the farthest point to be the Salvation Army in South Burlington (6.8 miles), over 1,500 miles were driven spending around 240 hours over these five years.

The most rewarding thing is that the project continues today after we have moved out from the graduate student housing.
