In a case study published by Shiny about the impact of digital tipping, Stonebridge Companies observed that increased tipping reduced staff turnover by up to 50%, which is encouraging. I recently spoke with a hotel owner who said that when he implemented an incentive program for housekeepers and front desk agents, the recipients of the extra cash were much more likely to miss shifts in the upcoming week. He speculated that it was because the employees had enough cash to cover bills and chose to skip shifts. I wonder if that's a rare exception or a typical unintended consequence. To be clear, I am in favor of digital tipping. The above example highlights potential unforeseen complications that must be creatively dealt with when implementing fundamental changes in compensation.
