More engaged IT team members aren’t enough to overcome systemic #culture and leadership issues. “Someone hired those PMs. Someone funded those companies. Someone set expectations for those PMs. A leader benefitted (or didn't from their work). I recently had a candid conversation with Kate Syuma on the Growthmates Podcast, recorded live at the Hatch Conference in Berlin. I was thrilled to share thoughts on some of the biggest misconceptions about user research — especially for teams with limited resources. Let’s break down the 3 major myths we discussed: - Research is too costly and time-consuming. Many believe that good research requires a lot of time and money, but that’s simply not true. 👉 Advice: You don’t need a large budget or a dedicated research team to make an impact, just get started with what you have! - Research doesn’t provide measurable ROI. One of the most frequent concerns I hear is that research can’t be tied to business results. 👉 Advice: It CAN be done … it just takes a little extra effort. Understand what metrics YOUR company cares about (eg. cost reduction, retention rates), then get creative on doing the math to map your research outcomes in those terms. - Democratizing research is too risky. Some worry that letting non-researchers contribute might lead to inconsistent or inaccurate findings. 👉 Advice: Encourage teams to take ownership of customer experience insights and ensure leadership supports a culture of curiosity and continuous learning. As I reflect back on my experience starting in PM and rumbling, bumbling, and stumbling through just about every trap imaginable, the more I appreciate David Pereira's recommended approach to ditch complicated business planning and use Ash Maurya's lean canvas. It'll help you zoom out to see the big picture of the complete product business. It will foster the critical thinking needed to draft a good business model while keeping you focused on what matters: creating value for customers and your company. It'll help you convert ideas into coherent actions because you'll see how all of the pieces fit together without complexity. My journey was influenced by meeting startups to explore potential partnership or M&A opportunities and seeing investor and management presentations. I started to notice what elements separate the best ones from the rest. It took time, but this helped improve how I evaluated 3rd party products and businesses as well as how I evaluated and steered investment in my own products. As it turns, while broader than lean canvas, the best investor presentations had the same elements included in lean canvas. I learned about lean canvas some time later, and wow - if I could have just started with that 😀.
