I finally attended a couple tech meetups this week! 🌟 I know I have many connections on here who are also seeking entry-level frontend opportunities so I thought I’d share some of the advice I was given from frontend developers and UX architects, several of whom have been in the industry for longer than I’ve been alive(!!!). • Get in touch with a tech recruiter in your area- They looked at me crazy when I told them I didn’t have a recruiter. Tech recruiters have connections to tech companies in your area and often know about job opportunities that are available before they’ve even been posted. • Work on mastering data structures and vanilla JavaScript- Data structures help you organize and manage data which is crucial for writing clean, optimized code. Mastering vanilla JavaScript solidifies core concepts and teaches you how to write code without relying on frameworks. • Know basic algorithms for interviews- The technical component of interviews often involves solving complex problems and algorithms are the fundamental tools for solving these problems. • Learn TypeScript- TypeScript is like JavaScript, but ✨better✨. It supports object oriented programming and uses static typing which is essential for large, complex applications. • Learn Next.js- Next.js is a react framework used for building fast, search-engine friendly, and scalable web applications. • Use AI sparingly- Relying too heavily on AI tools will likely, in some way, hinder the development of your problem-solving skills and critical thinking. • Try rubber duck debugging instead- Explaining a roadblock in your code to an inanimate object like a rubber duck will usually uncover the solution. • Take advantage of live streaming services like Twitch- Even if only a couple people join your live stream, you get to interact with developers of different skill levels and receive real-time feedback on your projects. It’s intimidating to put yourself in situations where you know you will likely be the least knowledgeable in the room, but it’s an opportunity to gain valuable insight and pick people’s brains. It might also help with nerves to bring a friend or partner who’s in tech and it makes for an interesting night out. So, get out there and good luck!

It couldn't be any more accurate. It should have mentioned stack-overflow and chatGpt (in this era). ChatGpt-dependent beginner developers do not know the struggle of multiple tabs.

What does it look like for a Software Developer to search for a great new role? For me, it has been sun up to sun down work to be honest. A resume and LinkedIn profile are great, but it feels like I need so much more. GitHub is barren due to years of private commits for my employer and if I want to work on software, I should show that, right? So here I am, setting up my site (well, I'm back at it and extending it), CI/CD (Vercel ftw), deployment, styling, TDD, etc. Check out that commit with my build status! When we're green, that's an auto-deploy to my site. Red will give me some insight on what I need to fix before it goes live. I love my job, but job-hunting? “How To Rock the Technical Interview” The Collab Lab #77, Career Lab Gaiden At The Collab Lab we had a self-study learning module titled “How to Rock the Technical Interview”. Wow! It was a video presentation packed with advice for tackling a variety of technical interviews and I’m so pumped after listening to it! - The speaker emphasized how important it is to approach technical interviews with a calm and prepared mindset. If something goes wrong—don’t panic! It’s all about keeping your cool, explaining your approach, and showing how you think through problems. - It’s totally okay to Google during an interview or ask for clarification from the interviewer(s). What matters is transparency! - Behavioral interviews are just as important! I loved the advice to build a list of past scenarios or challenges so you're ready with examples when asked. A great tip was to use Amazon’s leadership principles as inspiration! - Use the STAR method! (Situation, Task, Action, Result) This framework helps you clearly showcase your experiences and the positive impact you've had. The impact, or what happened, is important. Talking about the metrics is a nice bonus. - Some example behavioral interview questions were talked about. These included troubleshooting questions like "users are getting 504 Gateway errors, what would you do?" to explaining technical concepts like how the React Virtual DOM works! It was reassuring to hear that any experience—whether job-related or personal—can be relevant in demonstrating problem-solving and collaboration. - Don’t forget you’re interviewing the company as much as they’re interviewing you! Asking about work culture, learning opportunities, and work-life balance can give you a sense of whether the company is the right fit for you. Resources were recommended for practice: LeetCode, GeeksforGeeks, and “Cracking the Coding Interview” by Gayle Laakmann McDowell. We were reminded that while the journey will be tough, with consistent code practice and interview experience, we will succeed! These interviews aren’t just about your technical chops—they're about how you solve problems under pressure! The reality is that interviewers want to see how you approach challenges, just like you would on the job, so being yourself and asking for help when needed is perfectly fine! It’s important to be curious and ask about the “why’s” and the “how’s”. After a year and a half long job search, I finally feel like I’m on the right path and headed in the right direction. 🧭 When I first started out on my job hunt to change careers, I was dead set on finding a software development/engineering role. I thought (rather naively) that it was the most viable option, with the most opportunity. It absolutely was not. Turns out, I have a terrible job market to thank for changing my mind. It forced me to really look at my skills and what I’d be bringing into the tech space as a career changer. Skills like all the technical ones I’ve gained over the past two years, but also my skills in empathy I gained through coaching and documentation + problem solving skills that I’ve utilized in my current role. Taking a look at those skills, it became clear that I belong in Technical Support. While I’m still open to engineering roles, I know I bring a ton of value and energy into supporting others and improving their experience with technology. So if you or your team is looking for a self-taught, empathetic, highly-motivated support engineer - let’s chat!  😊

I had a great mentoring session with a highly creative developer, Christopher Garcia. He's a driven web developer who started his journey in 2019. Christopher's passion for front-end development stems from his love of creativity, and he's been honing his skills through various projects and learning new frameworks since then. One of the main concerns he raised was his lack of a formal CS degree, which is often perceived as a barrier in the tech industry. I shared my perspective, emphasizing that while a CS degree might be a ticket to top-tier companies like Google or Meta, it's optional for a successful software development career (I don't have one, for that matter!). There are countless other opportunities in the industry, and many companies prioritize skills and experience over formal education. We discussed his next steps and how to aim for his next job. If becoming a software developer was as easy as learning the "𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁" technology, then YouTube wouldn't be overrun with videos of coding boot camp grads talking about how hard it is to get hired. Your technology stack is still important, obviously. Don’t think so? Learn Fortran, COBOL and BrainF*ck and please tell me how that works out for you. The real disconnect between learning to code and getting hired is that career change requires a completely different skill set: - building an online presence - project management - job search strategy - time management - rejection handling - self promotion Luckily, a solid side project can help you build these skills. - plan out a complex app that will solve a problem you have - use Trello to break the tasks down into deliverables - deploy the app and try to get users - write about this experience online - use tech you want to learn

If your code base is entangled, dirty, and carries a large tech-debt, it doesn't matter how senior the devs you recruit are. Any dev, regardless of their experience, will take ages to understand your messy pile of 1000-line functions
