[🎙️] Do you know what French companies are doing to achieve their ecological transition and develop an economy that respects planetary boundaries? 🌍 Let me introduce you to the « CEC » (Convention of Companies for Climate), for which I’ve just been appointed (one of the many) spokesperson (or Top Voice, as LinkedIn likes to call it 😉). I had the incredible opportunity to take part in the very first edition back in 2021 (I'll tell you more about the origins of this initiative and the people in the photo in a future post.), right when the world was debating whether we should continue business as usual or completely rethink our societal and economic models. The experience was so eye-opening that I offered to become the CEC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (yes, I’m shooting high! 😅) to share this initiative and its learnings with our friends around the globe 🌍. After all, I had been elected Minister of Foreign Affairs of the « ideal Social Economy government » by Carenews readers in 2018. We’ll start by sharing some content in English. But first, a quick intro for those wondering: What exactly is the CEC?👇 Founded in December 2020, the Convention of Companies for Climate (CEC) aims to make the transition from an extractive economy to a regenerative one irresistible by 2030. It’s ambitious, but with motivated leaders and engaged experts, anything is possible 💪 Between 2021 and 2022, the first edition brought business leaders together in a collective effort to redefine their models within planetary boundaries. Today, there are 17 CEC programs, with over 2,000 leaders (CEOs & « Planet Champions ») and 1,000 companies redesigning their future. Violaine Degas and Benoît GEORGES, respectively, CDO and AI project manager at Les Echos, presented their approach to successfully integrating artificial intelligence into their newsroom at the last Paris AI Forum. Les Echos' approach to integrating AI into their newsroom is transparent, cross-functional, and based on pragmatism, focusing on journalists' ownership and ethical vigilance. While still in progress, this approach seems to be bearing fruit regarding adoption and innovation. It illustrates how traditional media can transform itself to take advantage of the opportunities offered by AI while remaining true to its journalistic values. Les Echos' approach has already led to developing and testing some fifteen AI-based functionalities. At the same time, it is also experimenting with other uses of AI, such as the ‘news playlist’, a personalized podcast service. ➽ An open and transparent mindset From the outset, Les Echos adopted a transparent and open approach to integrating AI into their editorial processes with clear guidelines about using AI to enhance journalists' capabilities, not to replace them, opening up the working groups to all interested editorial staff, including union representatives, and the involvement of works council members in the group of 25 people testing the new tools. ➽ Cross-functional collaboration Les Echos has established close collaboration between different departments and business lines. The editorial team is at the heart of the project, supported by digital management, the editorial IT department, and the data science team. ➽ A pragmatic and iterative methodology After identifying 168 potential use cases, the prioritization followed two axes: productivity gains and technical complexity. It includes testing internal and external tools (Maya, a private ChatGPT provided by LVMH) and the selection of two main solutions: a module integrated into the editorial CMS for creating and using personalized prompts and a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) developed in-house for archive searches. ➽ Ownership by the editorial team Les Echos has put in place several initiatives to encourage journalists to adopt AI tools with the creation of a dedicated role in the newsroom. Meetings and a newsletter open to all and an AI training plan for the 200 journalists in the newsroom encouraging testers to take an interest in prompts and come up with new ideas, create emulation within the newsroom and encourage the sharing of best practices. ➽ Constant vigilance on ethical and safety issues A priority goes to using secure tools provided by the LVMH Group, with particular attention paid to protecting content and its value and the development of internal solutions for better data control. Anne Hidalgo just announced that she will not be running for another 6-year term as Mayor of Paris. In her tenure, she has proven herself to be one of very few truly brave politicians. She took her 2014 mandate, and showed that she had the courage of her convictions, and instead of "analysis paralysis", she rapidly set out to make the changes she promised to make in Paris. Not everyone was on board, and any leader who actually makes changes will endure and waken the full forces of the anti-change stakeholders. But after a productive first term, the majority of Parisians sent her back to finish the job in 2020. More importantly, many people who were against her ideas at first, changed their minds and voted for her after seeing the results of the first-term's projects. These changes include abstract concepts like: - Equity, fairness, inclusion, access, addressing the modern city under a changing climate But also concrete changes like: - Hundreds of school streets, where traffic is blocked on blocks with schools, creating an instant playground, pedestrian and cyclist drop-off zone for kids, with NO car danger or idling vehicle pollution. - Changing the riverside freeways into parks for people. You can now walk along the riverside, or jog, bike, rollerblade, picnic, drink & revel. This is prime real estate in Paris she reclaimed for people, not cars. - Cleaner river - Pedestrian improvements and more space - Huge growth in bike lanes - Increased greenery and tree planting - Reduction of "heat island" contributors - Public transit enhancements & system growth - Flood preparedness systems - Efficient centralized citywide piped heat pump systems - Housing supply growth, stabilization of real estate prices And she contributed to shared successes like the 2024 Paris Olympics, transportation and mobility, a cleaner river, a 15 minute city. Paris is now a model city that many other metropolises can and ARE using as a leading example. Was Hidalgo perfect? No of course not - who is? I understand many of the critiques against her, but I believe she delivered on what she promised, and what she was elected to do. That makes her an unusually good politician, who is forward-leading as opposed to just forward-looking. Are we back on the world tech investments’ map ? Investing in Europe seems to be trending among GAFAM. After having announced 2.1 Bn$ in Spain and 3.4 bn$ in Germany, Microsoft has promised France during the Choose France Summit a record amount of 4Bn$ of investments in AI. During the same summit, Amazon has announced a 1.2 Bn$ AI investment in France. These investments will serve multiple purposes ranging from building new data centers to supporting local actors and creating new jobs in AI. While these news definitely cheer me up, they also fuel my regrets for the lack of a major integrated european tech actor. The world sees us as one but we have constantly been incapable of acting accordingly and we are paying the price everyday. Because these investments are a double edged sword. While boosting the local ecosystems, they will also allow the GAFAM to strengthen their respective positions at the expense of local actors. Their partnerships with our startups will create for them a largely favorable balance of power. The presence of a European Tech giant would have made any collaboration more even and prevented abuses in critical subjects such as data property. It’s about time we create such an actor otherwise we will stay small and divided in a world becoming more and more integrated.

The #Paris2024 Olympics set a new benchmark by committing to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, setting a new standard for large-scale events, far exceeding the average emissions of the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Games. By targeting every source of emissions and rallying all the parties involved, they're attempting to prove that another model can work. Paris 2024 focused on reducing emissions in three categories: transportation (34%), operations (33%), and construction (33%). Since it'll be over before we know it, they are already sharing their tools & methodology to allow others to step up their environmental transition game (pun intended) as it relates to major events. They are applying the ARO approach - avoid, reduce, offset - and of note: added two stages (forecast and mobilization). Breakdown: 🌏 Anticipate: They developed a tool to measure carbon footprint in order to gauge choices made since the bidding phase. 🌎 Avoid - They use 95% existing/temporary infrastructure and are only using facilities that can be used after the games are over. 🌏 Reduce - Accurately identified emission sources + proposed solutions activity-wide: low-carbon structures, renewable energy, sustainable catering, etc. 🌍 Offset - Takes into account the broadest component: the indirect impact of the games (e.g: travel by spectators). All emissions the can't be avoided are offset by projects designed to benefit all 5 continents. Early projects in place since 2021. 🌏 Mobilize: They plan to harness the potential of sport as an effective driver of the environmental transition and rally everyone (employees, partners, the sport movement, and also citizens) in the process. And I love this: They launched their own "climate coach" an app to measure your own personal + professional carbon footprint. Time to step up Germany 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 Corporations have pledged to invest €15bn in France at the “Choose France” summit — an annual event held since 2018 to facilitate foreign investments in the country. A large chunk of the money will be dedicated to AI. Microsoft stole the show after announcing its largest investment in France to date, a €4bn cash envelope to build more data centres — and expand existing ones — across the country by the end of 2025. The focus is on increasing the capacity of GPUs, which are needed to run large AI models. Amazon also announced that it’ll invest €1.2bn to further develop its French cloud and AI infrastructure. Quantum computing was also on the agenda. IBM pledged to invest €45m to expand the company’s research efforts in France. Up to 50 quantum researchers and engineers will be recruited in the country in the next year.

When you launch a #retail app such as KooulMaroc, and especially in the #food #delivery space, with the objective of promoting it, and getting #downloads and #orders, and you don’t have a deep pocket to lose #money for years .. you are facing this critical question : Where should I put my #marketing budget ? 4 options come to me : 1 - full budget on offline ads 2 - full budget on online ads 3 - mixed budget on both with nice promotions 4 - 0 budget on both and full budget on #promotions to propose the lowest products #prices possible and EVER to users Then I started to ask myself whether my marketing budget should go to Meta / TikTok / YouTube or benefit to my #customers 🤔🧐 USE CASE : Let’s say the first target for our startup would be to have 1% market share on food delivery in the 5 big Moroccan cities, that might actually do around 1,000,000 orders a month i.e very first target would be 10,000 orders a month for KooulMaroc. With only 50,000 usd monthly marketing budget, I can offer 10,000 McDonald's #bigmac menus or TACOS DE LYON #steakhouse menus at 1 usd each.. do you think I would need any #ads with this offer to get the needed virality ? The End of French (and Europe) Tech as We Know It? France’s newly formed government unveiled its 2025 budget proposal last week, and it hasn’t been well received by startup founders. The draft budget slashes key mechanisms that benefit startups, such as tax breaks for those building innovative products and for companies recruiting R&D teams—potentially increasing hiring costs by 40%. ➡️ “The impact on companies’ capacity to innovate could be colossal,” said Marianne Tordeux Bitker, Director of Public Affairs at France Digitale, a lobby for startups and VCs, in an interview with Sifted. ➡️ “It’s a negative signal for the sector,” some founders remarked. One founder even told Sifted that the proposal was the final push to register their new company in the U.S. rather than France. ➡️ “It risks partly killing the dynamic,” they added. Across Europe—at least in the UK - see the petition to the UK Chancellor, Italy - the recent law, and now France—governments appear to be downplaying efforts to support startup ecosystems in a moment where the new EU Commission seems to be willing to give a push.
