UNC5537 gained access to multiple organizations’ Snowflake customer instances using stolen credentials. These credentials were primarily obtained from various infostealer malware campaigns that infected non-Snowflake systems. As a result, the threat actor accessed affected accounts and exported substantial volumes of customer data. UNC5537 is now extorting many victims directly and attempting to sell the stolen data on cybercriminal forums. Key Findings: Credential Source: Mandiant found that most credentials used by UNC5537 were from historical infostealer infections, some dating back to 2020. Compromise Factors: Lack of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): The compromised accounts did not have MFA enabled, allowing access with just a valid username and password. Stale Credentials: Many stolen credentials remained valid for years and were never rotated or updated. Lack of Network Allow Lists: The affected Snowflake instances did not restrict access to trusted locations only. https://lnkd.in/gTRfwn86
