Sharing a bittersweet announcement: After 15 transformative years, I have left Illumination. In 2009, I interviewed with Chris Meledandri and his fledgling animation studio as a fresh-faced 22-year-old with a flimsy architecture portfolio and a love for animated films. Little did I know the next 15 years would be a rocket ship ride, with 15 film releases, $10.5 billion at the box office, and the rise of a globally beloved entertainment brand. I feel immensely grateful and proud to have helped fuel this journey, translating the magic of our films into mold-breaking creative: award-winning toys and merchandise, built experiences, retail installations, global campaigns, theme parks, mobile games, and hundreds of global partnerships and promotions. Scores of collectible toy programs with McDonald’s and Ferrero. Giant Macy’s Parade blimps x3. Tic Tacs and Twinkies. NASCAR integrations. Custom cereal boxes. Super Silly Fun Lands. Custom stickers appearing on millions of Chiquita bananas. Retail window installations at FAO Schwarz and Bloomingdale's. Viral popcorn carriers. Amazon boxes. Furry Grinch walls. The Super Mario Bros. Movie identity. Before I move forward, I want to take this rare pause to reflect and share 5 insights about fostering creativity that I’ve picked up along the ride at Illumination: 1️⃣ Think like a kid, design with sophistication. Embrace curiosity and whimsy, but channel it into work that is bold, intentional, and deeply crafted. Approach your work with a sense of joy, but aim for something lasting and meaningful. 2️⃣ Shape a creative culture of sharing and growth. Foster an environment where ideas—especially half-formed—are shared without fear. Collaboration thrives when voice feel safe to contribute, build on each other’s creativity, and celebrate progress—not just outcomes. 3️⃣ Perfection is the enemy of progress. Aiming for perfection can block momentum entirely. Strive for excellence, but don’t let the fear of imperfection stop you from taking the next step. Just do it. Make this a company slogan. 4️⃣ Great design is iterative. It thrives in a cycle of exploration, prototyping, and refinement. Seek feedback from divergent thinkers and let their perspectives sharpen your ideas. Embrace the messiness; it’s where the magic happens. 5️⃣ Your value is not your job title. Your work, impact, and growth are far more meaningful than a single LinkedIn line. Embrace your unique path, and don’t let comparison steal your joy. What’s Next: Fifteen years ago, I was inspired by the joy of storytelling. That hasn’t changed. I’m more energized than ever to create work that brings wonder into the world. Here's how you responded: Essential - for wellbeing: 85% Important - positive impact: 15% Neutral - not sure: 0% Not Important - no impact: 0% What These Results Tell Us The overwhelming majority of you (85%) believe that biophilic design elements are essential for wellbeing in the workplace. This strong preference underscores the critical role that natural light, greenery, and natural materials play in enhancing our mental and physical health at work. The remaining 15% also recognise the positive impact of these elements, highlighting their importance even if not deemed absolutely essential. Insights and Implications Enhancing Wellbeing: The results suggest a clear consensus on the importance of incorporating biophilic design to improve wellbeing. Natural elements can reduce stress, increase creativity, and boost overall happiness in the workplace. Productivity and Morale: Given that no respondents viewed biophilic elements as unimportant or neutral, it's evident that these design strategies contribute significantly to employee satisfaction and productivity. Design Strategy: For businesses and organisations, integrating biophilic design should be a key consideration in workspace planning. Whether you're designing a new office, renovating an existing space, or setting up a home office, incorporating elements like natural light, plants, and natural materials can have a profound impact. Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the design world, but its true potential emerges only when users know how to program and manage prompts precisely and in detail. It’s not just about relying on AI to generate images or projects, but about using it as a collaborative tool that responds to well-defined inputs. Designers must be able to clearly describe their ideas through drawings and with accurate written and verbal language. This process requires skills in formulating prompts that can translate creative concepts into understandable instructions for the AI. A well-described project goes beyond images; it requires articulating the design's needs, inspirations, and goals in detail. AI responds more effectively when the project is clearly explained, including technical specifics, the emotions one wishes to convey, and the usage contexts. This approach not only improves the quality of the outcome but also allows designers to maintain creative control, ensuring that the solutions proposed by AI align with the original vision. Systemic racism and ableism causes a lack of progress then points to the programs trying to change things and says they are not working. Corportate DE&I wasn't effective for stopping racism, homophobia and ableism, etc. because it wasn't allowed to be. Information was gathered, recommendations were made but then ignored by gatekeepers. Who are the gatekeepers? Why are they ignoring what they are being told? Policies, intentions and decision making are still not aligned. Training and legislation remained broken and not enforced. Could it be DE&I programs are getting pressure to be cancelled because the lack of progress was becoming an embarrassment and highlighting uncomfortable truths that brands don't want seen? Things won't change unless and until we all stop being silent or pretending things are going well. Until we reveal it's actually a myth that things are significantly better and changing enough to matter. Until the same old "mistakes" stop happening. Cudos to Debra Ruh for speaking up about this instance. Please share this post and start asking questions where you work and go to school. It's not complaining, it's asking for truth. It's accountability. Isn't the definition of insanity said to be trying harder doing what you have been despite evidence it's not working? Time to start being honest, stop accepting or praising bad or weak results, and together be brave and honest enough to point out failures when we see them. Abusers won't be stopped by appeasement. There is not enough honey, or asking nicely or patience. Gaslighting has to stop or be recognized and called out.
