Ok, so here's the second assignment for the research methods course. This one is a doozy. On this one I've gotta thank the amazing Julie Staggers and Julie Gerdes -- both of whom have mentored me in all things PTC. This assignment is the second creative challenge that students complete for Research Methods in Professional and Technical Communication. This assignment explores the shared values, rhetorical strategies, and discourse conventions used by researchers across diverse methodological communities, including scholarly/theoretical, design/creative, and empirical approaches (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods). It also highlights the differences in how researchers from these communities frame their research questions, literature reviews, and citations. Working collaboratively in groups of three, students engage in rhetorical analysis, textual analysis, and citation analysis to critique nine published research studies in one PTC journal. Subsequently, based on their analysis and research notes, students reflect on the values and discourse conventions that seem to guide the scholarly community represented in this journal. https://lnkd.in/e-ADsRXQ

Excellent workshop on the future directions social and behavioral science. Now time for a workshop on the challenges and opportunities for survey research. Response rates are down-how do we put together data packages that provide essential data from surveys, administrative data, and other forms of data to continue to provide high quality data on the human condition? A question groups around the world are grappling with.

"A new study by MIT researchers examines summertime heat exposure in prisons across the United States and identifies characteristics within prison facilities that can further contribute to a population’s vulnerability to summer heat. The study’s authors used high-spatial-resolution air temperature data to determine the daily average outdoor temperature for each of 1,614 prisons in the U.S., for every summer between the years 1990 and 2023. They found that the prisons that are exposed to the most extreme heat are located in the southwestern U.S., while prisons with the biggest changes in summertime heat, compared to the historical record, are in the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, and parts of the Midwest." #InsightstoAction #ClimateChange #ClimateJustice https://lnkd.in/eSajgKse

In our latest publication we present the Model for the Relational Model of Cyberbullying Motivation and Regulation. The theory is grounded in an ecological systems perspective. We hypothesize that interactions with parents, teachers, and peers influence psychological needs, which in turn affect motivation for and self-regulation of cyberbullying. During our review process, we were critiqued for not considering moral development, but where do children learn their behaviors from if not from the context around them? To address the online toxicity our children are experiencing and learning from, we need to address online influences and context across every system. A huge thank you to my coauthors, experts in cyberbullying prevention: Chris Barlett, Joy Gabrielli, Jackie Yourell, M.S., Ph.D., Yi-Wen Su, and Tracy Waasdorp. Great interview of NOAA' Greg Dusek on the role of tide predictions in history including their importance and how they were computed for D-day. And fast forward to today's importance of tides and water level predictions as relative sea level rise is continuously increasing the chances of flooding fir our coastal roads, infrastructure, marshes, tidal flats, ... Our coasts are changing fast, we need good predictions to make smart decisions. And tides are fascinating to watch and learn about.

Selective History and Eliminating People One used to hear about the communist era USSR, where prominent personalities used to be completely erased from history and public memory, with no mention of their name or work in the recorded history. D’Source is a project sponsored and funded by Ministry of Human Resources, Goverment of India as part of the National Mission in Education through ICT. A Digital Design Resource Database is one of the three main objectives of D’Source. Ravi Poovaiah, an IIT Bombay faculty member, who first joined IITB as my research assistant, is the co-ordinator of D’Source. One would assume that such a database would have a system which will accurately document and present all information which is part of the official record; without selectively omitting or suppressing data. Then search ‘Ravi Poovaiah’ and see the list of projects by him stretch on to pages after pages. Shouldn’t there be a monitoring mechanism to ensure that recorded history is based on factual data and not personal biases?
