🎨 Recap from the "New Types of Audience Engagement in Museums" Panel at the Museums in Web3 Conference 🖼️ Last June, we had the chance to organize a WAC Lab conference in Basel during the Digital Art Mile organized by ArtMeta! Here are some key takeaways from the conversation: 1️⃣ Merel van Helsdingen from Nxt Museum in Amsterdam shared her museum's approach: "We didn’t start with a collection; we started with a need for experimentation." By embracing new media art, they challenge the traditional "white cube" gallery model. 2️⃣ Regina Harsanyi from Museum of the Moving Image emphasized the constant evolution of moving image art: "We always have to keep up with emerging tech. Our collection reflects the full spectrum of what moving images can mean." 3️⃣ Poet and artist Sasha Stiles discussed how technology can transform text-based art: "I’m interested in pushing literature beyond the page, into spaces like museums and digital realms. Technology can create new relationships between writer & reader." 4️⃣ Aleksandra Artamonovskaja from trilitech / Tezos highlighted the complexity of new technologies in museum spaces: "Digital art breaks down walls. It flows, transcends boundaries, and creates new ways to engage with audiences. But with experimentation, trial and error is inevitable." 5️⃣ Sasha Stiles reflected on her interactive art practice: "Audiences sometimes assume digital art is endlessly adaptable. But I prefer creating site-specific works that activate the whole space—it's like building a new performance every time." 6️⃣ On blockchain and visitor engagement, Merel van Helsdingen shared their experiment with Proof of Attendance Protocol (@poapxyz): “We used it to encourage deeper engagement with the works. People had to answer questions about the art before they could collect their POAP." 7️⃣ On blockchain engagement, Aleksandra Artamonovskaja added: “Live minting and co-creation are exciting. Visitors can go beyond being passive observers and walk away with a unique part of the experience—something tangible to hold on to.” 8️⃣ Lastly, Regina Harsanyi touched on NFTs and museum spaces: "Museums shouldn’t necessarily sell NFTs, but they can offer meaningful digital takeaways. It’s like Felix Gonzalez-Torres' candy—you’re taking a piece of the art home, and that’s powerful." The panel touched on everything from AI to blockchain to creative challenges in digital art installation, all underscoring the need for adaptability and embracing the unpredictable nature of new media. I faced this situation when moving same code from one GPU to a more powerful one —————— Summary from the article: In software engineering, dependency versions are constrained and containers are used to ensure reproducibility. However, this may not be enough with LLMs if the GPU is not identical. All of this can introduce challenges, especially if the hardware used in development differs from that used in production, or if you want to opt for more powerful GPUs at some point in order to scale up in production. In this article, I first present the protocol of the experiment, then compare the results between two environments from which only the GPU differs, one with an Nvidia T4 and the other with an Nvidia A10G. I start with simple cases and then longer prompts, like for a RAG. Each GPU has its own architecture, optimizations and parallelization capacity, which can lead to small differences in the accuracy of the calculations. With LLMs, these small differences repeated over millions of calculations can lead to a discrepancy influencing word choice when generating sequences. Since LLMs are autoregressive, i.e. they predict the next word based on previous ones, a different word in the middle of the generation can cause a cascading reaction, resulting in a discrepancy in the response. For RAGs, longer prompts require more computation, increasing the possibility of inaccuracies and promoting potential discrepancies between two GPUs. Compared to my usual posts on LinkedIn, this article allowed me to flesh out my thoughts and experiences in a more in-depth way, while also including some code.
