“David was definitely one of the brightest person I have ever met since he was my classmate at grammar school. A typical problem-solver, ready to grasp the problem and find a solution quickly, no matter whether it is computer science or logistics. Excellent in math, informatics, transport-related branches (mainly railways), and many other areas.”

Key technologies for the integrated transport systems in the public transit
conference “Logistic Monitor” 2016, Žilina
The Integrated transport systems (in UK “Transport Association”, in German speaking countries „Verkehrsverbund“ with the same meaning) comprise a unified system of the passenger transport in a given urban, metropolitan, or regional area with unified pricing system (tariffs), and perfectly interconnected network of lines and connections. Therefore they offer a viable alternative to the individual car transport. The author, who has been concerned with the public transit area more than a half of a decade, describes in his contribution the ground principles of the integrated transport, and then he introduces some of the key technologies for an effective planning and controlling of the public transport. He builds on his extensive experiences and case studies in the Czech Republic and Europe.

White Paper of the European Commission for the transport area: what are the conditions and consequences of the goals set for the modal shift by 2030 and 2050?
University of Žilina
The White Paper of the European Commission for the transport area sets among others very ambitious goals concerning the modal split. Namely it is intended to reach 30% rate of the railway and waterborne transport over 300 km by 2030, and even 50% by 2050. May these goals be ever achieved, however? May they grow out of the political declarations into everyday reality? How to boost the efficiency of the Single Wagon Loads (SWL) using the economic and optimizing tools

In the 19th century transporting goods on rail meant a rise and development for many rural areas – however, today the same service, being in shade of the ubiquitous road transport, falls into an unpleasant inefficiency and unprofitability or financial loss. Is it anyhow possible to revert this undesirable trend, and to learn again to exploit the economies scale, which are very typical for the railway transport? The author discusses new approaches to the SWL services, and sketches the possibilities of their “resurrection” provided by the modern software tools.

With thorough measuring, careful planning, and sophisticated optimizing, a significantly higher efficiency may be achieved, together with saving considerable financial and environmental resources, which boosts the position of railways on the strongly competitive railway market. An absolutely indispensable condition for any planning, optimizing and saving is, however, to have the data collected in the first place, namely at the general level of an infrastructure manager (IM). The authors of this contribution introduce therefore the “Energy Portal”, which is a web-based information tool being developed for the environment of the Central-European railways, concentrating the consumption data collected from the individual vehicles, and offering many specialized advanced functionalities, as structured storage of the data, automatic alarms based on user-defined conditions, various text-based, graphical and map-based reports, data aggregations, data filters, and also consumption predictions based on the activated train paths. The data validation based on the standard UIC 930 is also an integral part of the whole process.

The paper analyses the area of fleet management in the sense of both the technological processes and the information support. Then it emphasizes the importance of an effective information tool for managing the wagon fleet, based on the precise transport orders, wagon positions, and a network-wide coverage. As an example of a successful implementation, it introduces IS ÚDIV which is operated in the environment of ČD Cargo and which has proven distinct positive effects for its productivity. To reduce the cost burden of repositioning empty wagons, IS ÚDIV includes also a specialized module with mathematical optimization based on multiple-criteria heuristics, which helps the railway operator to cut its non-productive costs.
Together, the telematic system with the presented components results in a distinct cost reduction in the railway freight transport, and it contributes to an effective fleet management. -

Their significance has been growing even more in the setting of the liberalized transport market, where many private railway undertakings (RU) or operators enter the railway network and content for its spare capacity. The contribution discusses covers the high-level structure of the key information systems of the infrastructure manager, their coverage of the aforementioned technological processes, from designing the timetables and ordering ad hoc paths, to the operational control in all of its spatial and time levels, to assessing the traffic and resolving the exceptional situations. As the most important feature, the authors emphasize a profound integration of all these systems, which involves unifying all the databases and facilitates reusing the captured data, which boosts the overall efficiency of the system. The authors draw from their huge experiences of developing, solving, implementing, and operating these systems, above all in the environment of Czech and Slovak railway networks.

As a pilot project in Czech Republic, a part of the 1st National Railway Corridor Děčín – Praha – Kolín has been covered by the GSM-R network. This dedicated private network of the railway operator provides modern, robust communication services, which can be used for the purposes of both controlling the railway traffic and for dispatching the railway carrier. The paper discusses a project of a railway wireless transport network (ŽBPS), which use especially infrastructure of the GSM-R or GSM network, is based on the open standards of TCP/IP and UDP, and offers a unique way of the dynamic translation of the train numbers and vehicles numbers to IP addresses and routing packets among various network elements. This project is a joint research of the RADOM s.r.o., ČD a.s., ČD-Telematika a.s., Oltis Group a.s. and University Pardubice. These companies, are leading vendors, administrators and inventors of mobile communication devices, communication technologies, and information systems for controlling the railway traffic, respectively.

The modern technologies for controlling the railway traffic cannot get along without a wide support of various information systems, structured in several geographic and time levels. The paper concerns new trends in the development of the network dispatching systems, namely their integration in all the described levels, the significance of their widespread use, and massive usage of their data. The text also emphasizes the new conditions on the railway transport market, which call for the independent role of the infrastructure manager (railway operator), and for the non-discriminating access of all the authorized train operators. In the case studies, the authors also describe implementing the solution in the Czech and Slovak railway network.
