Power delivery is the new frontier for performance. As data centers push the limits of AI and custom compute, traditional board-level power systems are struggling to keep up. That’s where Package Integrated Voltage Regulation (PIVR) comes in. By moving voltage regulators from the board into the chip package itself, PIVR shortens the power delivery path—cutting transmission losses by up to 85% and increasing total power delivered by 15%. The result: higher power density, lower noise, and more efficient use of every watt. This architectural shift enables compute performance to scale from hundreds of watts to multi-kilowatt levels, unlocking new efficiency and density gains for next-generation custom silicon. The first and second generation of #cellular #networks haved been optimized for circuit-switched speech calls. But "what if we optimize for data?". Does that affect how we re-use frequencies? That was a burning question that I had already for quite some time. At IEEE Vehicular Technology Society VTC conference in Oslo, it was very interesting for me to see a revival and rethinking of radio communications for packet switched data. Already for many years, speech represents only a small fraction of the traffic load of our #4G and #5G networks. The vast majority is data. At VTC 2025, Slim Alouini and Hong-Chuan Yang pitched their performance metric for delay-sensitive data. Aylin Yener pitched that "Connecting with a purpose" implies that we optimize for the impact that data packets from IoT edge devices have on transferring an understanding, particularly if AI processes the received data but received bits may have errors. And I heard more examples of potential paradigm shifts. SemiEngineering's latest tech talk examines the pros and cons of replacing copper with optical in data-intensive AI systems. AI is generating so much traffic that traditional copper-based approaches for moving data inside a chip, between chips, and between systems, are running out of steam. Just adding more channels is no longer viable. It requires more power to drive signals, and the distance those signals can travel without excessive loss is shrinking.
