Most artists struggle with details before nailing the basics. I’ve seen brilliant models fall apart… Not because of talent— …but because the topology basics were ignored. You don’t need 100 tools. You just need these repeatable fundamentals. Here's 10 fundamentals a 3D artist must know for best human topology: 1. Start with quads. ↳ Always use four-sided polygons. → Cleaner geometry. → Better deformations. → Less animation issues. 2. Follow muscle flow. ↳ Topology should match real human anatomy. → Study muscle groups. → Flow edge loops with movement in mind. → Avoid random edge directions. 3. Maintain edge loops. ↳ Vital for clean subdivision and rigging. → Use loops around joints. → Keep control during animation. → Easier to add complexity later. 4. Keep poly count manageable. ↳ High poly ≠ high quality. → Focus on form first. → Refinement comes after structure. → Don’t sculpt what topology can't support. 5. Define landmarks clearly. ↳ Eyes, nose, mouth need special edge loops. → Build loops for expressions. → Don’t join them randomly. → Keep symmetry intact. 6. Nail proportions early. ↳ Fixing later = redoing everything. → Use human reference overlays. → Check from multiple angles. → Don’t trust your memory. 7. Study real anatomy. ↳ You’re not modeling shapes—you’re modeling life. → Use anatomy books. → Analyze joints and how they move. → Observe how skin folds. 8. Avoid n-gons and triangles in deforming areas. ↳ They kill animation flow. → Use quads at knees, elbows. → Clean up messy corners. → Check your mesh before rigging. 9. Optimize for UV and texturing. ↳ Good topo = better maps. → Straighten UV islands where possible. → Minimize seams. → Evenly spaced polys = better detail. 10. Constantly retopo. ↳ The first mesh is never the final mesh. → Sculpt freely, then retopologize. → Use retopo tools in Blender, ZBrush. → Don’t settle for messy basemesh. You get great models not by adding, …but by refining the basics over and over. Great human topology isn't flashy. It's smart, intentional, and focused. ❌ Last year at IAMAG, Feng Zhu and the artists at Framestore explained the biggest Red Flags and Deal Breakers in Aspiring Concept Artist's Portfolios. Here they are: - Lack of Fundamentals - Lack of 2D Skills - Lack of 3D Skills - Overuse of Kitbash - Lack of Research, and not Grounded enough Work - Following Trends (I see you with your Last of us 2 Fan Arts and Gumroad Tutorials) - AI Use (omg, shocking) - Lack of Variety / One Trick Ponies only doing one thing - Scattered Portfolios - Over Bloated and Unorganized Portfolios - No Social Skills (our job is client Facing) - Portfolio feeling like a Chore-list of things to prove rather than having Personality in it - Focusing on demonstrating Technical Skills and no Design Skills - Only Shapes, no Function - Spending most time in 3D Software and Rendering - No Storytelling / Lack of Entertainment Value / Empty Content They even explained the causes of these problems: - Widely available tutorials and examples online to source from. - Emulating designers vs learning from the real world, the jobs of the industry have become a tad more mainstream than 10 years ago. - Skipping idealization and sketching stage (because it's the hard part) - Tools making people think they can skip the fundamentals and hard work - No functional design experience (lack of reference usage) - Disregarding the audience and the human experience This hurts... I know ❌For some aspiring artist's work... it's not even a list of red flags at that point, but a Chinese Communist Parade. It's not your fault tho… - So many companies are selling tutorials and kitbashing assets today and profiting massively from the current perceived "meta" of the industry… - When we look at big companies like One Pixel Brush or ILM, we might believe kitbashing is the way...the truth is...they are 100% kitbashing...but with assets their own 3D artists modeled for the concept art team… - Nobody dares to address these issues in the industry online because again it's so easy to profit from it. 👉 You recognized yourself in one or several of these and want to fix your situation? How to Design Difficulty in Puzzle Games Based on the Playliner (by SensorTower) research, here is a guide to designing difficulty: 1. Offer multiple difficulty tiers • Easy, Hard, Super Hard — with clear visuals to indicate the level. 2. Use attempts, not win rate, to tune difficulty • Low attempts (1–3) = Easy • High attempts (20–35) = Hard 3. Follow a recommended difficulty curve • Start easy (Levels 1–20) to build confidence • Add a hard spike (Levels 20–30) to create challenge • Introduce progressive increases and major paywalls after Level 50 4. Gradually introduce mechanics • Let players master core gameplay before adding complexity. 5. Reward wisely • Scale rewards with difficulty. Tougher levels should yield better prizes. 6. Test and iterate • Track completion rates. • Adjust blocker levels. • Fine-tune using player feedback. • Alternate between challenging and easier phases.
