🌌 𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗢𝗡-𝗫 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺!🌌 ION-X, a spin-off from the CNRS and co-created with the venture builder Technofounders, has successfully raised €13 million to accelerate the industrialization of its ionic propulsion systems for small satellites (10-150 kg). 🚀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 💡 ION-X emerged from groundbreaking research conducted at the C2N - Centre de Nanosciences et de Nanotechnologies (CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay) by Jacques Gierak, winner of the 2023 CNRS Innovation Medal. 🔬 The project received early support in 2020 through pre-maturation funding and the CNRS startup program RISE. 🤝 This led to a fruitful collaboration with Technofounders, culminating in the co-creation of ION-X in 2021. Deon and I are thrilled to announce that Cognyx just closed a 1.7m€ Pre-Seed to help manufacturers design hardware at software speed! The round is led by Bpifrance's VC team Digital Ventures, and features some of the most prominent business angels of the French & German startup scenes. “Hardware is hard”? Let's make it easier and faster to engineer. Our journey started only 8 months ago, when we decided to join forces with OSS Ventures. Using the studio’s robust co-design methodology, we uncovered a massive opportunity in the manufacturing space: engineering R&D cycles are often very slow, mostly because technical and product data lies disseminated across siloed IT systems. Engineers and stakeholders spend weeks identifying dependencies and solving conflicts between design, manufacturing or supply constraints. In particular, the industry’s most central R&D deliverable, the BOM (Bill of Materials) and its many variants, takes forever to align over several departments and scattered data sets. What first sounds like a technical problem actually has a direct impact to a manufacturing company’s core competitiveness: it slows down innovation cycles, extends Time to Market, makes it really hard to optimize products for a set of conflicting constraints, and eventually leads to serious quality issues on the production line. The problem sizes in dozens of millions for most large manufacturers. Cognyx intends to fix this, leveraging the latest available technologies. Using knowledge graphs, the data layer we built already bridges the gap between historical manufacturing softwares (ERP, PLM, MES…). All engineers and stakeholders can now contribute in real time on a unique "super-BOM", solving technical conflicts in real-time. The resulting acceleration of engineering workflows is already massive and… we’re only getting started with #AI! (stay tuned :) We’re incredibly excited by what lies ahead of us, and very grateful to a whole crowd of people for believing in our vision from the very early days! #MasterThesis Master Thesis Title: Redundant whole body control In the context of the ANR project AMATSUMARA, 6 month (February-August) master internship at LS2N in Nantes. The candidate will work in a dynamic team of engineers and researchers, to develop real industrial solutions, with our partners BRIAND and NAVAL GROUP. In case of successful internship, we will offer him/her a 2 year contract on similar topics! Motivations and general objectives: In the context of the factory of the future, to address tasks such as large scale precise assembly, or to weld large parts, robots should combine dual-arm manipulation skills with mobility in the workspace, provided, e.g., by a wheeled or by a cable-driven platform. The purpose of the AMATSUMARA project is to develop dual arm mobile manipulation solutions, to address the use cases of our industrial partners, BRIAND and NAVAL GROUP. The main objective of the master thesis is to assess various mobile manipulation designs and their controllers, for the two use cases. Preliminary work should be carried out in simulation, to design and test custom mobile manipulators (e.g., verify: workspace, accessibility, manipulability, precision, etc). On a longer term, the candidate will have the opportunity to deploy the solution on the many real robots available within the AMATSUMARA’s consortium. Proposed work plan: - Study the state of art on redundant robot control - Explore and test the existing libraries on robot motion control and suggest solutions for the two use cases - Validate the designs and methods in simulation, and then on real robots. In our series "Putting Students in the Spotlight 🧑‍🎓🔦 ," we feature Léo Ducloy and Nathan Cancel, engineering students from INSA Toulouse, working on a smart farming project aimed at revolutionizing the agricultural sector with a robotic chassis to enhance crop analysis and harvesting efficiency. Their team is developing a robotic chassis to navigate fields, monitor crop health, and determine optimal harvesting times. This innovation addresses the inefficiency and waste in current automatic harvesters, which often can't differentiate between mature and immature crops. Their solution aims to maximize yield and reduce waste, especially in crops like broccoli 🥦, where improper harvesting leads to up to 50% unsellable produce. Specializing in mechanical engineering, Léo and Nathan focussed on the physical design of the robot, ensuring the mechanical components are robust and functional. The software aspect is managed by another team. One major challenge they faced was the lack of accessible data for their initial design, as companies often keep proprietary data confidential. They relied on educated guesses and iterative testing, starting with basic models before refining their designs. Another challenge was determining the chassis weight without existing data. They began with an estimate of 600 kilograms and adjusted their design iteratively. This approach helped them navigate initial roadblocks and refine their chassis design gradually. Throughout the project, they have developed essential skills in project management and professional communication. Regular meetings and feedback sessions improved their ability to manage complex projects and work autonomously. Working in an international environment also enhanced their English proficiency, boosting their confidence in discussing technical concepts. Seeing their designs come to life has been the most satisfying aspect for them. Building and testing physical components in a lab provided invaluable hands-on experience. They were particularly thrilled when their numerical predictions matched real-world results, validating their hard work and calculations. Léo and Nathan recommend other students to join this type of projects, especially those interested in sustainable farming practices. The project offers a unique opportunity to apply mechanical engineering principles to real-world problems, focusing on improving agricultural efficiency and reducing waste. In summary, Léo and Nathan's journey through this smart farming project highlights the importance of iterative design, teamwork, and adaptability. ✨ IT ONLY TAKES ONE POINT🚀 Meet Cubik, the innovative creation of Hugo Gounon and Martin Matter, second-year electrical engineering students (GE2) at INSA Strasbourg. As part of their TIPE (Personal Initiative Project), they've engineered a simple yet fascinating cube that can balance perfectly on one of its corners! 🔧 The Tech Behind Cubik: Cubik is powered by an Arduino Nano, equipped with two Nidec 24h brushless motors and an MPU-6050 gyroscope and accelerometer. This combination measures angular velocity and acceleration across three axes. Using a complementary filter, the angles on the X and Y axes are calculated to maintain balance. ⚙️ The Balancing Act: To keep Cubik balanced, the principle of the reaction wheel is employed, rooted in Newton's Third Law (action-reaction). We are delighted to announce the creation of CSX-AI (www.csx-ai.com). This startup results from a collaboration between researchers from French and English universities. The founders have many years of R&D experience with successful software tools adopted by the market. CSX-AI was established to commercialize the research outcomes developed from numerous EU and national research projects, focusing mainly on rigorous techniques to ensure AI systems’ safety, security, and explainability. CSX-AI has unique skills in these aspects, with the main advances in rigorous methods that provide provable guarantees. Rigorous methods are necessary for AI regulations as they can provide evidence of the satisfiability of the properties and enable traceability and accountability for failures. Our uniqueness is two-fold. On the one hand, our platform and tools support responsible development, ensuring that the final AI systems’ properties (e.g., robustness, fairness, privacy) are estimated and assured with errors bounded and traceable. On the other hand, our platform and tools can work efficiently with large-scale AI systems, minimizing the negative impacts of rigorous techniques that usually do not scale.

The existing economic system, the linear economy, is dependent solely on the resources provided by our 🌍 📆On June 5, we mark #WorldEnvironmentDay a chance to raise awareness of the state of these resources. 🏭 A system that will inevitably come under scrutiny due to factors such as the following: ➡️ The end of abundance, ➡️the exceeding of six out of nine planetary boundaries, ➡️tensions on prime resources like water, ➡️conflicts of usage that are making tensions worse, etc ‼️🧨 In a nutshell, a model of economics that can no longer ignore its shortcomings. The alternative : #functionaleconomy 💡 The functional economy can be defined as a system that favors the use rather than the sale of a product. It aims to develop integrated solutions for goods and services with a view to #sustainabledevelopment. Thus, economic exchange is no more based on the transfer of ownership of goods, which remain the producer's property throughout its life cycle, but on the consent of users to pay a use-value. 🎙️ Functional economy; two typical examples Michelin replacing the sale of tires to road hauliers by setting up a payment system based on the number of kilometers traveled, with a complete life cycle management service (personalized pressure optimization, advice, maintenance, etc.) Xerox provision (without sale or rental) of photocopiers on customer premises, and invoicing by the sheet, with monitoring and maintenance service for devices and consumables. 👍🏽 Renting photocopiers, computers, software, or even floor coverings… the functional economy significantly reduces the cost of access to many services.
